Nah, I’m just screwing with you.
Wouldn’t it be something though?
It’s my fourth wedding anniversary on Wednesday and it’s also new comics day – how fortuitous! Luckily it’s a pretty small week…
Action Comics #886 – More Nightwing and Flamebird shenanigans that I just can’t bring myself to care about. At least the Captain Atom feature’s getting more interesting.
Adventure Comics #7 – Black Lantern Superboy and Wonder Girl? Okay, I’ll bite – but they could have just called it an issue of
Teen Titans and be done with it.
Batgirl #7 – Still loving it!
Booster Gold #29 – I was going to leave after Blackest Night but somehow I’ve been dragged back into it.
Titans #22 – I have no defense. Please don’t judge me.
Amazing Spider-Man #620 – I’m enjoying the current Mysterio arc quite a lot – he’s one of the better villains, and I like the new career path he’s taking here.
Hitman Monkey #1 – Designed to appeal specifically to me, it would appear – but I still say I’m not picking this up unless the word of mouth is really, really strong.
It’s funny; neither of my parents are the slightest bit nerdy at all, but both my eldest sister and myself come pretty close. Honestly, I’m not sure that I really qualify as a nerd. I’ve never been entirely sure of the definition, or of the difference between a nerd and a geek – although somehow, I think that geek involves technology in some way.
My father comes closest to either definition, I suspect, but only because as an engineer he’s always been interested in computers and various gadgetry – something I have inherited in a far less hands-on way.
So where do all my interests come from? I think it’s because I was encouraged when I was little to pursue what I enjoyed. Just look at this picture of me aged 8, circa 1982.

Right there is pretty much the genesis of every bit of nerdiness I have – except for my deep and abiding love of all things Star Trek. Yes, even Voyager.
In this picture there’s evidence of my early interest in Star Wars, Doctor Who, fantasy, comics, books, Dan Dare, science fiction, figure collecting (in the form of Kermit and Fozzie) and even talking monkeys – allow me to elaborate:
See?
Right here, in this one photo, is the genesis of a nerd. I have to admit, in spite of collecting comics and toys (not to mention movies and TV shows) pretty consistently from the age I was in this picture to, oh, about now, I’ve always kind of hidden my nerdlight under a bushel.
I mean, yes, there was that picture of me in the Eagle wearing a logo jumper that my mum knitted for me (and believe me, if I can find that picture, I’m putting it up here), but aside from that I think I’ve always managed to come across as relatively…well, normal for lack of a better word.
I think the main reason for this was my shyness. I was – and still am – incredibly shy. I didn’t want to draw attention to myself too much when I was younger; to a large extent I still don’t. And I think because of it I’ve held back a bit from doing things that I always wanted to do. I followed the safe career path because that was easier.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s served me pretty well, and more importantly I met my wife through work so I can’t really complain too much – but I still have this itch that needs to be scratched.
As my wife has said in the past, looking wistfully at the bucket loads of money earned by ubernerds such as Joss Whedon, “Yes, you’re nerdy. You’re just not nerdy enough.”
As with Captain America, no real surprise since Spider-Woman has been one of Bendis’ pet character since he started on New Avengers (and was originally meant to be the lead in Alias).
What this image does tell us is, firstly, that the Avengers roster isn’t necessarily limited to the number of letters in the word ‘Avengers’ (as some people thought yesterday with the large ‘A’ behind the Cap image) – probably a pretty good job given the plethora of characters running around currently claiming Avengerhood.
Secondly, it suggest that the Heroic Age teaser that was released a couple of weeks back -

- is just that, a teaser, and not a roster for the team. That in itself suggests that the Agents of Atlas will be around in some form or another, since Gorilla Man is so prominent in the image.
I’m also taking away from this that the Thing isn’t going to be an Avenger – which relieves me greatly as quite honestly, the Thing as an Avenger just doesn’t work.
Well, I haven’t got to the store for last week on account of being in the UK (and yes, I know there are comic stores here too – I was in a couple in Manchester on Saturday, Forbidden Planet and Traveling Man, but I don’t see the point in spending more money to buy comics and fly them back over to where I could get them cheaper) – but here’s the pull list for the week!
Red Robin #9 – Continues to be one of the two Batman family books that I still get. Good solid fun – but I suspect it may end up as a trade pick pretty soon.
Superman: World of New Krypton #12 – This has been a pretty good series, especially in conjunction with the other Superbooks. Not too sure about the upcoming War of the Supermen, though…
Deadpool Team-Up #896 – I don’t want to talk about it.
Marvel Heartbreakers – This sounds like it could be fun but it depends on the creative talent. Even so, I’ll give it a look.
Nova #34 – I don’t know how many times I need to say it: great superhero book.
Siege #2 – The first issue of this felt like almost pure set-up. Bendis really needs to deliver quickly.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer #32 – I wonder who Twilight i – what? Stupid internet…
