I don’t often run through the Dark Horse solicits but there were a few things that caught my eye so I figured why not?

BARB WIRE OMNIBUSReally? Are Dark Horse going to throw out all their back material in these things, or was someone actually asking for this?

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #16

I ran the Jo Chen cover a while ago (the one with the not so surprise guest star) but this is the first time I’ve seen the Georges Jeanty cover – who are these guys on the left? Am I supposed to know? Nice to see Karl Moline back for the not so surprise guest star, too…

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER “CONVERSATIONS WITH DEAD PEOPLE” BOARD

I love this solicit: “Game board for entertainment purposes only.” And the crazy people protest starts in 3…2…1…

CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #1 I’ve been a Conan follower since the new series began 4 or 5 years ago – and this is the perfect jumping off point for me. My only issue with following the trades from now on is that often with Dark Horse, the trades are more expensive than the single issues. I don’t quite understand that.

FEAR AGENT #23: I AGAINST I part 2 (of 6)

This is a book that I have heard a lot of good things about but have yet to pick up. If anyone has any advice yay or nay, let me know!

THE GOON #26

Another book that I’ve heard good stuff about but never picked up. Is it worth it? Trades or singles? Is there a good jumping on point?

GROO: HELL ON EARTH

Humor comics have never quite worked for me but again I’ve heard so many good things about it – maybe I should take a look?

HELLBOY: THE CROOKED MAN #1 (of 3)

Good grief, this is one of those posts that just begs for a beating. I admit it – I’ve never read Hellboy in any form. I did kind of like the first movie, and I’ll probably watch the second but…is the comic any good? Is there a good jumping on point?

INDIANA JONES AND THE TOMB OF THE GODS #2 (of 4)

Dark Horse really seems to do well with their licensed stuff, don’t they? Haven’t seen a new Indy comic in what, ten years? Chances are I’ll at the very least take a look at it.

MYSPACE DARK HORSE PRESENTS VOLUME 1

Lots of great creators contributing to this – but we already saw this free on MySpace, right? Now we’re supposed to pay for it? I’ll be interested to see how much this sells – should be interesting to see how it affects the Zuda model too.

REELART STUDIOS: YANKEE GIRL

So…Yankee Girl is some kind of cross between Wonder Woman and Miss America? Only with her boobs falling out?

THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN VOLUME 4

Like I said, I’m a Conan fan – these Essential style reprints any good?

STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC #31 — TURNABOUT

Here’s the thing – I said I was going to switch to trades for the Star Wars books, but they’re actually slightly more expensive than the single issues. What’s the deal with that??!

STAR WARS LEGACY #26

One of the more enjoyable SW books right now – John Ostrander really is knocking this out of the park.

STAR WARS: REBELLION #15 — VECTOR part 7 (of 12)

Vector hits the original trilogy era – and apparently Han and Chewie may finally show up in the book!

TUROK: SON OF STONE

So…this is the Dark Horse comic adaptation of the Capcom game of the Acclaim property of the old Valiant comic, huh?

Man, I miss Acclaim. Although I realize that there are only a few of us out there…

I personally thought the earlier Hellboy comics were amazing. I haven’t picked up any of the recent releases (because I had decided to wait for trade, but then got confused about what I already had, and didn’t know if I should rebuy the better stuff), so I don’t know how good it is anymore. But, if you like Mignola’s work, I’d buy the trades from the first couple minis. Good mix of HP Lovecraft style horror and mystery… with lots of Hellboy punching giant frogs and octopuses.

    Buffy Cover:

I would say that Kennedy, Willow’s current gal is in the foreground. I cannot remember her name, but I would venture the short redhead is the girl that was the reluctant slayer from the final season that came into her own by the final battle. I would need to watch that season or finnaly find the last Watcher’s guide to get a name for ya.

I am gonna have to agree with David here on Kennedy being the one near the bottom left, however I don’t think that’s Vi above her (the red-head slayer I think David was trying to remember)

Conversations with Dead People Board……how much is that….not that I am gonna get it….probably.

Fear Agent is a good series, my suggestion though…..pick up the first trade. or the Last Goodbye trade if it has come out yet which gives a little bit of the origin story of the main character

Hellboy comics aren’t too bad, honestly though, try checking the library for a trade, for some reason libraries tend to have trades of Hellboy….go figure.

Vi, thanks Nick. I was trying to remember her name. It resembles her, but with so many slayers it gets a bit tedious in placing names, especialy with the new girls created for the comic.

As far as the Savage Sword of Conan collections go, they’re pretty sweet, but I’m learning that they read much better in small doses. The more stories I read in one sitting, the less I like ‘em: the stories are a bit formulaic and repetitive. With that said, it’s nice to pick up one of these stories when you just want to read a violent tale or see some great art.

Where do you get your Star Wars TPBs from? I get mine off of Amazon and they’re all cheaper than singles there – $12.89 for the KOTOR trades for example.

  7. Rich on April 15, 2008 at 1:16 pm

General & Nick – Okay, I’ll try a Hellboy trade. Maybe Fear Agent.

David & Nick – Ah, okay, Vi. Been a few years since I’ve watched any Buffy.

Nick – the board is $30.

James – knew I could rely on you for a Conan answer!

Anon – Actually, that’s a good point. I really need to start getting trades somewhere other than the LCS…
