You know, I loved the original Scream. I originally saw it while I was travelling in Australia in a year out after university, and then again a few months later when I got to Los Angeles on the same trip. For that alone it’ll have a special place in my heart.
The movie was playing for months because it was a fresh, innovative, self-referential and fun horror movie.
It’s no secret that the third film is the weakest of the three (and the only one not penned by Kevin Williamson), but it’s still better than a lot of the torture-porn that followed. The first two, though, stand as favorites of mine, even if they did inspire a few years’ worth of pretty-people-in peril flicks; The Faculty and Final Destination was actually pretty fun, but movies like Urban Legend and I Know What You Did Last Summer didn’t fare quite as well – and don’t get me started on the pile of crap that Scary Movie was and spawned.
In any case, in spite of liking the movies I’m not sure I really need a Scream 4, reported to be in the works by AICN. It’s not that I don’t think there’s potential (have Neve Campbell’s character as the killer, for example, finally succumbing to the lunacy in her life), I’m just not sure it’s something I want to see messed up any further, and I’m not sure how much farther the satirical aspect of the franchise could be taken.
Still, if you can make a fourth movie in the Indiana Jones, Rambo and Die Hard trilogies, why not Scream?

I do not acknowledge Indy IV…it never happened.
Depends on who’s involved. Craven behind the camera would be nice, with Williamson writing, but that’s not a sure thing – look at Cursed.
I’d watch another Scream – I love the first two.
Die Hard 4 was awesome.
Indy Four? What Indy Four? I remember no Indy Four.
And I haven’t even seen ANY of the Rambo movies.
Come ot think of it, I haven’t seen Scream yet, but I probably am going to now.

Sorry. :-S
I’ve gone back and rewatched all the Rambo movies over the last two months. the final really completes the thought and character development (though I hear that there are developmental deals for 5 and 6). I think that Scream has the potential to do the same so long as the overall story doesn’t get so off base. The other two referenced series don’t do so much for character development as the do for simply creating a new environment for the characters to continue what they’ve already done over and over.
