This is the week. The week that The Purge starts. There’s just too many books to buy – and between the (a few years late) realization last week at BACC that you can pick up a lot of recent books for 50cents or a buck if you wait a few months, and the impending arrival of the unborn, then it’s just time to start cutting.

Let’s go…
Batman #692 – Tony Daniel’s back, which means it’s a new arc, which means…the book gets cut. I like the new status quo, but a purge is a purge, right?
Blackest Night #4 – High-priced, but it’s a mini so it stays. Plus, I’m enjoying it.

Blackest Night: Titans #3 – Last issue of a mini. I’ve enjoyed these BN tie-in minis, but they’ve proven inconsequential so I won’t be picking up the next round of them. At least not on the primary market.

Detective Comics #858 – This is a tough cut; the art is beautiful but I’m not digging the story too much. I can really do without those shape-changing animals that Rucka introduced in his first stay in Gotham. Plus, new storyline so time to bail.

Gotham City Sirens #5 – May survive. If it’s another fill in, I’m out – but if it’s a conclusion to Dini’s stuff, then I’ll pick it up. Even so, don’t expect this to stay on the list long term.

Green Lantern #47 – This is here til BN runs its course, then we’ll see what the new status quo is.

Justice Society of America #32 – I think this is the end of this first arc under the new team. Which means its my last issue.

Superman #693 – This is staying – all of the Superbooks are staying for now.

Superman: Secret Origin #2 – I’m not far enough in to commit to this mini, the scheduling looks slow and it’ll come out in a beautiful hardcover at some point. So…sorry, but I’m dropping it.

Teen Titans #76 – I got dragged back into this after being away, thanks to cheap issues. I’ll be looking in the cheap back-issue bins in a few months.

World’s Finest #1 – Gone before it starts. Expect that I’d enjoy it but it’ll be collected at some point.

Avengers: The Initiative #29 – I don’t expect this book to be around past Dark Reign, so I’m staying for now – as for the rumored replacement Avengers Academy…maybe.

Dark Reign: The List: The Punisher & Wolverine #1 – Stupid completist that I am, I’m picking up all these List specials – but these two (two in the same week!) I’ll be looking at first; after all I’m not picking up either character’s solo books right now…

Fantastic Four #572 – No matter what I think of the creative team, it will be a cold day in hell when I drop the FF. Probably.

Guardians of the Galaxy #19 – This is a tough one. I love this book. Love it – but I think it would read well in trade. Then again, it’s such a low seller that I should really support it now…so it stays.

Hulk #16 – Sigh. I’m sticking with all things Hulk through the whole Fall of the Hulks thing. Incidentally, I picked up most of this run on the cheap at BACC. It’s largely terrible, but the art is cartoony enough to be entertaining. There was a time where Loeb could write a coherent story, though.

Incredible Hercules #137 – See GoG: love it, low sales, stays.

New Avengers #58 – See FF. Cold. Dead. Fingers.

New Mutants #6 – I know, I can’t believe it either. I like the team, I like the book…I’ve waited literally years for these characters to be together again…but it has to be dropped as a first round buy; expect all the Necrosha books to go the same way.

Nova #30 – Staying, staying, staying. See GoG and Hercules.

Secret Warriors #9 – Staying on the list through this storyline/end of Dark Reign and then dropped. I think I need to go reread this from the beginning.

Spider-Man: The Clone Saga #2 – This kills me but it’s the same principle as Secret Origin; not far enough in to commit, I can pick it all up later anyway. So there you go.

X-Necrosha #1 – I anticipate a pretty hardcover collection of all these issues for less than the total price of the individuals, so I’m out.

X-Force #20 – Probably my last issue for now, since Necrosha takes over next issue (I think). I enjoy this a ridiculous amount, though.

X-Men Forever #10 – Ditto. This issue is the last in the second trade, so it’s a good place to stop, even if I still enjoy it more than most other X-books out there.
Okay, tallying that’s up – there’s a whopping 26 books that I’d normally want to pick up, which is a ridiculous week. They break down as 18 ongoings, 5 minis and 3 one-shots.
I’ve dropped (or in the case of one-shots, I’m just not picking them up) 4 ongoings, 3 minis and 1 one-shot, I’m not sure about the other 2 one-shots and of the 14 remaining ongoings, I foresee dropping at least 5 of them within the next 2 or 3 issues.
This is early days, so baby steps – but I think I’m off to a decent start here.

One Response to Rich’s Pull List – 28th October 2009: The Purge Begins

  1. Nick on October 26, 2009 at 8:29 am

In the long run you'll find cutting back is a good thing. Trades are easier to store, have the complete story and are generally cheaper to buy then buying all the individual issues that make up said trade. PLUS…you don't have to be subjected to two page ads.
