I jumped off the Angel book following the close of After the Fall as, to be honest, I thought it was convoluted and not particularly good – but damned if I don’t like this cover to the new Spike series…

I have to say (1) I love the poster, and (2) I’m looking forward to the movie.
Good stuff!

And it’s DC-centric.
I bet Marvel’s kicking themselves.

So instead I decided to run all the covers from the original DV8 #1 (plus I had nothing else lined up as a post).
There were, unsurprisingly, 8 variants – one for each of the seven deadly sins and the group shot by interior artist Humberto Ramos…
GROUP SHOT – Humberto Ramos. Very ’90s – the team coming out of the steam, the team’s handlers (Ivana Baiul and Sideshow Bob) lording it over them – but effective.
ENVY – Michael Lopez. Sublime was the team’s resident powerhouse – and she happened to be rich and privileged too (not to mention Deathblow’s daughter). So you should, you know, envy her.
LUST – Kevin Nowlan. Okay, this is just creepy. Threshold, son of Team 7′s Stephen Callahan, was basically controlled by Ivana using sex and drugs. Also, he had a thing for his sister. Ew.
SLOTH – Jim Lee. Frostbite, team leader, was a bit of a bum. So I suppose it fits.
GLUTTONY – Glenn Fabry. Powerhaus used the emotions of people around him to bulk up and gain superstrength. He didn’t eat to do it, but whatever. Like most Fabry covers, I appreciate the art but I find it vaguely creepy.
GREED - J Scott Campbell. Bliss (Threshold’s sister) could use her powers to make people feel extremes of pleasure or pain, and usually did both in her one night stands – with fatal results. One can only imagine that she could make a lot of money with this…
WRATH – Liberatore. Evo was ‘the monstrous one’ of the team, but he was also the most immature. The whole ‘wolfing out’ thing started happening later in the series, I think – I seem to remember him being pretty mild mannered at the start.
PRIDE – Adam Hughes. Copycat was the team’s resident telepath with the ability to take over others. Copycat also had multiple personalities and was batshit crazy. So kind of like Legion, only prettier. Which is something to be proud of, I guess.
Weirdly, kind-of-probability manipulator Freestyle didn’t get a cover. You’d have thought that they would have put her on the Greed cover and lumped Bliss and Threshold together doing all kind of very wrong Lust type things.
You know, I really want to go and reread the series now – the early Warren Ellis stuff was especially good, but it was enjoyable pretty much all the way through.

I think that about says it all for this run, doesn’t it?
At least John Harkness didn’t finish it off…

Honestly, I like Ed Benes art for pinups – it has a pleasant, cheesecake aspect without going too overboard (I know that many will disagree) but recently I’ve always found his interiors too stiff, posed.
Not everyone needs to be thrusting their ass out for the panel’s POV.
That said, I love this cover. It’s a pretty simple construction, with the Black Lantern hands forcing your focus inward on the threatened Dove, and she looks suitable menaced and endangered.
There’s the obligatory ripped mask and tattered clothing – but, surprisingly, her outfit isn’t too tattered, and her dignity is intact.
That said, her appearance here does unfortunately mean that I’ll probably be picking up the Blackest Night: Titans book, as Hawk and Dove have long been favorites of mine – ever since Armageddon 2001 where, oddly enough, where Dove was killed by the future Hawk, Monarch.
Man, she’s lucky she came back before Black Hand got all ring happy….although isn’t Hank Hall dead at the moment, after Atom Smasher swapped him out for his mother on a doomed aircraft?
Hmm….

Is it all still post-apocalyptic and stuff?
Actually, is anyone still reading Wildstorm comics?

I unfolded it.
I unfolded it again.
I glanced through very quickly, noted the price, then folded it back up and put it back on the shelf.
It’s not that I don’t support innovation. It’s that I don’t want to spend $4 plus tax on 16 pages of stories, no matter how big those pages are – especially as I’m going to have a hell of a time storing the newsprint.
The way I figure it, there’ll more than likely be a collection at some point and even if it costs the same as the individual issues, it’ll be easier to stick on a shelf or something than the originals.
Is anyone else getting the comic/paper? Do you feel it’s worth it?

(That Runaways one is adorable and may be worth picking up even though I don’t get the book).
I wish they weren’t variants (unless they’re 50/50) – as they remind me, intentionally no doubt, of 1986′s 25th Anniversary frame covers…
…although that math clearly doesn’t work.
God, the fact that I was buying those off the shelf 23 years ago terrifies me!

(Except Major Victory, maybe).
But it looks like that’s about to change, with the original Guardians showing up. Between Victory and Starhawk’s presence it was inevitable, but it still makes me grin.
Looks like this line up includes Charlie-27, Nikki, Starhawk, Hollywood (the future Wonder Man) and Killraven (who may have joined the Guardians way after I quit reading the book back in the 80s).
What, Yondu and Martinex didn’t make the cut for the cover?

Nova. Still awesome even if it spends too much time on the Corps these days.
Love this page from next week’s Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth #1 -featuring the lord of the Savage Land and his vicious sabretoothed companion the way that only Deadpool can see them!
Have to say, I find myself enjoying Deadpool a lot at the moment; I’m not convinced that he needs two ongoing titles, and I won’t be picking it up due to the $3.99 price point – but all the same, it’s nice to see Marvel pushing someone other than Wolverine for a change.
The following page has a Johnny Weismuller reference. Doesn’t get better than that!
