Apparently this episode went unaired. I like to think that was because of the atrocious Killer Moth outfits…some detective that Wayne guy is!

Kalinara has got herself worked up – and rightly so – over the cover art to the new Showcase Presents: Batgirl.
While I can’t defend it, I have to say that the stories are a product of their time, and while Batgirl – Oracle – may now be one of the most capable and well developed characters in the DCU, when she was introduced back in 1967…not so much…
Even so, it does seem a particularly stupid move on the part of DC.

Spoilers ahoy!
Gardner standing by and letting someone tell him what he can and can’t do when there’s butt he could be kicking? He doesn’t let the Guardians do it but he does let the Chinese government do it?
I mentioned recently that I thought that Batgirl might be dying in the conclusion of the Titans East storyline in Teen Titans as I felt like there was little else left to do to redeem the character somewhat.
But now I’ve been looking at the cover for Teen Titans #47 and the just-released cover for a Countdown issue in July – and looks like I’m wrong (I’m assuming this is the same funeral…):
From Teen Titans #47:
From Countdown:
Yep, that looks like Batgirl on the right in that second image. Running down who we have on these covers: Nightwing, Cyborg, Donna Troy, Beast Boy, Robin, Wonder Girl, Speedy and Batgirl are all now known to be safe. Given that Jericho (worthless character, IMO) only just returned I guess that leaves two options from the current roster – Kid Devil or Ravager.
And, as someone pointed out to me, those are roses on the coffin…

I picked up the latest issue of Teen Titans yesterday and it was pretty good. Almost a shame to see Match devolve into a poor man’s Bizarro, but I can live with it. Also sorry to see just how low Risk has sunk – I may have been the only person who enjoyed the Jurgens-era Teen Titans book (speaking of, whatever happened to Argent? Having seen her for ages…)
But the main talking point about the issue is, of course, the revelation regarding Batgirl and why she moved to the dark side during the one year break – and if you’ve avoided the issue or internet title, stop reading now.
So Deathstroke’s been injecting her with the loopy juice to get back at the bat-family for taking his children away from him, eh?
Well…okay, I guess. I mean it explains the homicidal behavior, but as has been pointed out elsewhere, it really doesn’t explain the whole plot a while ago in Robin about her going crazy because she found out that David Cain had been training others (which actually didn’t make any sense at the time either) but okay, I can live with it – and I suspect we’ll see Deathstroke grabbing Cassie at some point in either the closing weeks of 52 or World War III.
But does this mean there’s hope for Batgirl after this? Maybe yes – what she could turn into is an even more angsty version of her former self. You think she had trouble dealing with the guy she killed when she was little? Wait till you see her now!
Maybe not.
But hey, the possibility is there.
The other big Titans news yesterday was, of course, that Geoff Johns and Tony Daniels are leaving the book, handing over the reins to Adam Beechen and an as-yet unnamed artist. While I’ll miss the team, I think that Adam’s a fine choice; his Robin work has been great – the editorially-mandated Batgirl stuff notwithstanding – and I look forward to seeing where he goes with the book.
One last thing; Newsarama has a great interview with Geoff Johns up right now looking back at the past four years, and at one point he says:
Originally we wanted Supergirl on the team, but she was in Legion and they
didn’t want to confuse people. And she was also going through some kind of
“rebellion” phase or something, so we thought — oh, we’ll just make up our own
alien character. And if we would have made Supergirl up, maybe we would have
made her more like this. And we just came up with the idea — a hero with a
mysterious background as a White Martian, but making her a very delicate
character who got her feelings hurt really bad.
Ah ha! I knew it!! I knew I wasn’t going crazy when I said that Miss Martian was the new Supergirl!!
Sometimes it’s good to be right….

- I really like Ed Benes’ artwork but his site sketches seem to be veering more and more towards cheesecake these days. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
- I bought my final issue of Ghost Rider last night – I like the character and the art but for my money Daniel Way’s scripts leave a bit to be desired. Like the plot and direction, but as others have said, when you have a better idea of what’s been going on from reading the recap page than reading the issue it’s time to move on.
- Loren has a poll up on his blog about Supergirl. Go vote, I’ll still be here when you get back.
- Supernova’s identity – while not a huge surprise – made me smile as the reveal should make a few DC decriers eat their words. That said, how this particular character pulled it off did involve a sleight of hand trick that may come back into play later in the series…
- Well it certainly didn’t take them long to crack the code in the back of the DC books this week, did it? And it looks like we’ve seen at least 2 of the missing 52 seconds too…
- Kalinara has a pretty interesting post up about why she doesn’t like Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl – and I find myself agreeing with pretty much everything she says. As usual.
- Looks like the variant covers and I were right – the New Avengers roster is now confirmed
- Mike Wieringo has a new DEVIANTART Gallery that’s definitely worth a browse.
- CB Cebulski is in a kimono. That is all.
And that’s it for the week – have a good weekend all!
Continue Reading »Yep, one of the top two iconic heroes of the 20th Century – arguably the most iconic – and I don’t get him.
That’s not to say that I don’t buy the comics, of course. I do. Batman and Detective Comics have been firm fixes on my list for years now (David Lapham’s City of Crime arc aside – I just couldn’t get into that). They’ve been there as a fixture since the Catacalysm arc, and on and off since Knightfall, and I read him for twelve years or so before that. Not just those two books either – Shadow of the Bat (remember that?) and Gotham Knights were there too, plus all the ancillary books (Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, Gotham Central, Birds of Prey, Azrael, Catwoman…I drew the line at Anarky, thankfully).
I think that’s where my problem lies – I have more interest in the satellite characters of the Batman mythos than in the central man himself. Why? Because he doesn’t make sense – and more importantly, the fact that he’s been allowed to run around all these years by the rest of the world’s heroes doesn’t make sense either.
Sure, there was the whole parents-gunned-down-in-front-of-me thing. Sure, there was the billions in cash and stock options sitting around. Sure, there was the butler and kindly doctor (and look how well the good Dr Thompkins turned out) who inexplicably helped this orphan evade foster care and a steadying parental influence. And sure, there was the bat-through-the-window thing as well.
But it never crossed his mind to turn his hand to public office? To work the system from the inside and clean it up that way? At the very least he could have just bribed all the corrupt cops to go straight! But no, he takes to leaping off roof-tops and wearing a bat outfit (and not a very convincing one at that).
The closest parallels in the Marvel Universe are the Punisher and Moon Knight – but at least everyone acknowledges that they are certifiable. In the DCU, you can see everyone just kind of sliding over the topic:
“Batman? Absolutely, my best friend and staunchest ally. What? Crazy? Er…sorry, earthquake in Japan – gotta go!”
And if you look at those he surrounds himself, they’re kind of on a slippery slope too.
Batgirl (Babs) got shot then had cybersex with the Blue Beetle. Nightwing’s had his issues with breakdowns. Catwoman had a baby with the son of another guy she was sleeping with. Thomas Elliot, his best childhood friend went batshit crazy, became his new greatest foe and then got terribly over used. Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) finally found peace, then went batshit crazy off-panel and became head of the League of Assassins. Jason Todd died, came back to life thanks to Superboy Prime ex machina then went batshit crazy. Azrael was always batshit crazy.
Not a great track record there – only the current Robin, Tim Drake seems to be fairly well adjusted. Of course, he’s also trying to re-clone his dead best friend even while he makes out with his dead best friend’s girlfriend. So maybe we shouldn’t count our chickens on how he’s going to turn out just yet.
And yet people still think its okay to let Batman do what he does! Because, y’know, it’s all been working out so well so far. Oh, except for that time his files on how to take down his JLA buddies got into the wrong hands. Or that time his files to create a war between Gotham’s gangs got into the wrong hands. Or that time the satellite he designed to spy on the world’s heroes became intelligent and got into the wrong hands – and he didn’t even notice.
Batman.
Is it just me?
