The first pull list of the New Year (well, aside from last week’s) and I’m already a week behind as I didn’t get to the store since New Year…

You know, I’m not sure I could have repeated myself more in that sentence if I tried.

Detective Comics #852 – Fun and games with Hush. Again.

Faces of Evil: Grundy – I’ve always liked Grundy, outside of his last incarnation in JLA, so having Scott Kolins on this sounds good to me.

Trinity #32 – I’m this deep in it now that I’m buying out of stubbornness but honestly this has really, really got boring.

Amazing Spider-Man #582 – I recommend this book to anyone right now, anyone at all.

Cable #10 – Fun but a little slow moving.

Dead Of Night Featuring Werewolf By Night #1 – I may pick this up because Jack Russell is one of my favorite under-utilized characters.

Invincible Iron Man #9 – The new status quo for the MU has certainly given Iron Man a shake-up. Fraction’s producing a very readable book here.

Official Index To The Marvel Universe #1 – I like the idea of this but I think it may have been better served to be online. I’ll take a look anyway.

Punisher #1 – Again, I’ll take a look but I’ve always been uncomfortable with the Punisher in the mainstream Marvel Universe.

Secret Invasion War Of Kings One Shot – Looking forward to this as the Inhumans have been very well-used these past few years.

Spider-Man Fear Itself #1 – Never been a fan of Man-Thing but it’s Spidey…

War Of Kings Saga – Hey, it’s free.

X-Men Manifest Destiny #5 – The back-ups have been way more entertaining than the lead, unfortunately.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #21 – Love that cover.

I don’t know why, but I really like these faux-magazine covers right now.

Another week, another pull list…

Batgirl #6 (of 6) – The best thing I can say about this is that it’s no worse than I expected. The worst is I kept on buying it.

Batman & the Outsiders #14 – Okay, so this is yet another Batgirl/Nightwing throwdown right? Wouldn’t it be easier to cut to the chase?

Manhunter #37 – Not dead yet!

Robin #181 – Having loser The General be under the Red Robin garb only makes me think more that Tim will be in it come the post-Battle for the Cowl world. Oh, and Anarky’s always struck me as dumb. He’s still the Joker’s son, right?

Supergirl #36 – New Krypton continues, and Kara’s mom is turning out to be quite the cold-hearted bitch.

Trinity #29 – Er, okay, kinda dull now, sadly. Pick up the pace, please.

Amazing Spider-Man Family #3 – Love this book out of principle: and soon it comes with added Spider-Girl!

Amazing Spider-Man #581 – One year into BND, and we get to exactly how Harry Osborn’s back alive. I have to say, it’s been the best year Spidey’s seen since the eighties in terms of quality.

Avengers The Initiative #19 – Interested to see where this goes going forward…

Dark Reign New Nation – A collection of previews by any other name…

Invincible Iron Man #8 – Fraction’s now in sole control of the world’s most hated man; be interested to see where he goes from here.

Mighty Avengers #20 – I’ll be saying more later…

Thunderbolts #127 – As long as Songbird makes it out alive I’ll be happy…

Uncanny X-Men #505 – Er, we were with that mutant Nazi hunter, weren’t we? Kind of lost track.

X-Men Kingbreaker #1 – Maybe. I didn’t pick up Emperor Vulcan, but I want to see how War of Kings goes so I may take a look at this.

X-Men Legacy #219 – I seem to recall this supposed to be a twelve issue arc when it started out, which would make this the final issue. I guess plans changed?

Oh, and Buffy #20 with that great cover ships this week too….

Pretty big week if I got everything on the list…

Action Comics #872 – The shit is hitting the fan. Them pesky Kryptonians ain’t nothing but trouble!

Booster Gold #15 – Is Dan Jurgens here yet?

Detective Comics #851 – The Last Days of Gotham kicks off.

Final Crisis #5 – I should be excited. Instead I’m just kind of surprised it’s coming out.

Final Crisis: Revelations #4 – This isn’t bad, but any kind of Spectre bores me. Also I’m not sure how much I like Vandal Savage as Cain.

Green Lantern Corps #31 – A Blackest Night Prelude; looks like the run up for the next big event starts before the current one finishes!

Justice League of America #27 – Milestone arrives. Woo.

Nightwing #151 – Running out the clock on the Dick as Nightwing years. I mean, c’mon there’s a whole other Nightwing headlining Action Comics in a few months.

Trinity #28 – This seems to have stalled a little.

Amazing Spider-Man #580 – Roger Stern!

Astonishing X-Men Ghost Boxes #2 – I’m sure there’ll be about 8 pages of content for $4 but I’ll take a look anyway.

Captain Britain And MI 13 #8 – Like this book a lot. More Captain Midlands and Union Jack, please!

Secret Invasion Dark Reign – I thought the end to SI was pretty predictable, but the new
world order has my interest piqued.

X-Men Noir #1 – I’ll take a look but this is one that will be a trader for me.

X-Men Spider-Man #2 – First issue was good fun; this one, set around the Kraven’s Last Hunt/Mutant Massacre time, probably less with the witty banter.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #20 – The good: Buffy animated! The bad: Jeph Loeb.

PSA: Do not buy this comic…

September 26, 2008 by

…because while it should stink of win, instead it stinks like a three-week old unflushed turd.

Poorly structured (presumably due to great swaths of the film being cut out as our POV is a couple of ghosts who I can only hope don’t appear in the movie), and only adequately scripted and illustrated, it feels like this comic castrated a fun story on the way to print.

Good lord, it’s almost enough to make me suggest not seeing the movie. Almost.

Another big week thanks to Secret Invasion again…and don’t forget that it’s Jim Rhodes Week

Legion of Super Heroes #46 – I’ve kind of forgotten what’s going on. I always enjoy it when I read it but can’t help thinking it’s treading water till everything changes.

Superman #680 – Krypto kicks ass this issue. And it’s about time. Robinson still hasn’t quite got a handle on this but it’s improving.

Teen Titans #63 – Even after the killer dog incident I’m still kind of interested. Probably won’t pick it up, but if it’s in the dollar bins…

Trinity #17 – It’s readable enough that I’m in for the long haul, and at least things are happening. Not the home run I expected though.

Avengers The Initiative #17 – Ant-Man is on base with a crap load of Skrulls. Will they steal his Wii?

Captain America #42 – Most anticipated book of the week – the end of the Death of Captain America arc!

Fantastic Four #560 – Couple of weeks late but like I said a while ago, better than I thought it was when I re-read the whole thing.

Marvel 1985 #5 – Maybe this will read better as a whole aswell. Got Last Action Hero vibes from the last scene of last issue.

Ms Marvel #31 – No. I already said so long to Carol, so I won’t be picking this up.

New Avengers #45 – What were the Skrulls up to in House of M? Why should we care and what effect will it have on the current storyline? Who knows?

Nova #17 – Nova vs Super Skrull. Is it wrong that I want K’lrt to win?

Secret Invasion Amazing Spider-Man #2 – Good fun even without Spidey.

She-Hulk #33 – And here’s the second dose of K’lrt fun!

Thunderbolts #124 – Norman Osborn going kill-crazy against Skrulls? What’s not to like?

X-Force #7 – So what’s going on with Angel again? Can he switch between forms at will or what?

X-Men Legacy #216 – Xavier vs Cyclops. And I hope Cyclops bitchslaps him into next issue.

My Name Is Bruce #1- Campbell, Bruce Campbell. Trailer’s great so this is getting checked out.

Proof #12 – Monkey vs Fairy. Beat that!
And Jim Rhodes will return…this afternoon!

TV to Comic

September 4, 2008 by

The translation of television to comic doesn’t always work too well. Whether it’s a combination of character likenesses, licensing approvals or whatever else, the comics rarely feel like the TV shows.

In fact, it usually seems to work better when the TV shows are off the air.
The X-Files had a decent run through Topps comics in the 90s – and Topps also ran Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess books at the time, but where are Topps now?
These days, licenses seem to be split between IDW (AngelSpike, Doctor Who and Star Trek) and Dynamite (Battlestar Galactica, Xena, Highlander, Army of Darkness), with Dark Horse picking up Star Wars, Firefly/Serenity and Buffy (of course) and Wildstorm snagging the occasional one – like Supernatural, X-Files and the long-rumored but never-confirmed Veronica Mars.
Thing is, I can rarely get into them. I want to, because I like the shows that they’re based on but they rarely feel ‘real’ to me. There’s the sense that it doesn’t really matter what happens in the comic because it will never, ever ‘count’.
The exception to the rule seems to be Buffy and Angel – and that’s probably helped by the fact that they involve the shows creators in them. But when you’re reading Battlestar Galactica, it seems unlikely that anything there will ever carry over into the show.
By and large, I just can’t get into them. Are they aimed at a different audience to regular comics readers? Does that audience ever cross into mainstream comics? Is there a way to get them too?

Another week, another crapload of comics…

Batgirl #1 – Adam Beechen sets out to redeem Batgirl. Behold the uproar!

Batman and the Outsiders #9 – Looker! Dammit, they know how to keep me coming back even if it’s craptastic.

Final Crisis: Rogue’s Revenge #1 – Johns. Kolins. Rogues. Even if the return of Barry Allen is souring the taste in my mouth right now, at least this should be enjoyable.

Trinity#7 – Drop the Tarot back ups already, will you?

Amazing Spider-Man #566 – The new Kraven’s first hunt continues, with a plot twist straight out of ASM #5, true believers!

Captain America #40 – Cap vs Cap – again!

Incredible Hercules #119 – The Sacred Invasion continues, and Herc beds Snowbird some more. Maybe.

Mighty Avengers #16 – Elektra’s the focus this issue but at some point I want to find out when Jarvis got replaced, dammit!

X-Force #5 – Stupidly enjoyable.

Spike: After the Fall #1 – Parent series Angel has it’s problems yet is still enjoyable. Not expecting anything more or less from this.

Conan the Cimmerian #1 – Part of me wants to leave this to trade while the other reminds me how much I enjoyed the previous series. Probably trades…

Not sure if I’ll get to the store on Wednesday (as I’ll hopefully be watching Incredible Hulk) but if I do, here’s what might be on the list…

Justice Society of America #16 – The whole Gog thing has dragged on way too long but it seems that it’s finally on the move again.

Manhunter #31 – Probably…I mean, its good that its been renewed but it feels like it was away for so long that its time may have passed. Chances are that I’ll take a look, I guess.

Nightwing
#145 – I carried on picking up this in spite of misgivings and I am enjoying it much to my disdain. Guess I’ll carry on for this ish and the upcoming RIP tie-ins and then make a decision one way or the other.

Robin/Spoiler Special
#1 – Looking forward to this one, actually. Robin is back to being one of my favorite books with Dixon back, and having Steph back is just gravy.

Trinity
#1 – OK. I’m going to give it four issues and thats it.

Amazing Spider-Man
#561 – I think its the third part of the Paper Doll story – and MJ’s back!

Avengers/Invaders
#2 – First issue was pretty good. I’m cautiously optimistic about this now.

Cable
#4 – Gah. I have no defense liking this as I don’t actually think its that good – but I am enjoying it.

Invincible Iron Man
#2 – First issue was fun, surprisingly, so I’m here for the first arc.

Nova
#14 – Nova vs Silver Surfer. Nuff said.

Secret Invasion
#3 – The Skrulls have hit New York, so the battle seems to be well and truly joined at this point.

Spider-Man Family
#9 – I’m a sucker for this book.

Ultimate Origins
#1 – Have to admit that I’m not a huge follower of the Ultimate U but this does have me intrigued.

Young X-Men
#3 – Another enjoyable book launch post-Messiah Complex; the mutants are reallt good these days.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
#15 – The finale of the Wolves at the Gate storyline. Last issue ended with one of the cast getting a pretty fatal-looking wound; hope she recovers but I’m not optimistic.

Actually that’s a pretty big week..

Amidst all the movie hoopla and the FCBD stuff, comics still come out on a Wednesday…

Action Comics Annual #11 – Holy crap. Really?

Nightwing #144 -Maybe. Wasn’t overly keen on the first arc after what looked like a good start…I guess I’ll take a look but no guarantees.

Rann/Thanagar War #1 – An odd one. While I am looking forward to this I’m not sure that I can be bothered picking it up monthly.

Amazing Spider-Man #558 – Barry Kitson!

Avengers Invaders #1 – Another maybe. I’m more interested than I was but I’m still not 100% sold…although lets face it, I probably will be.

Cable #3 – My secret shame is that in spite of the ridiculousness of the art and the slowness of the story, I’m kind of enjoying this.

Invincible Iron Man #1 – Who am I kidding? I’ll take a look even though I said I wouldn’t.

Iron Man Viva Las Vegas #1 – After Jon Favreau’s showing this weekend, I am actually tempted to take a look at this too. Maybe…

Mighty Avengers #13 – In spite of the Sam Jackson in-joke, I’m looking forward to this and hoping that it reveals a little more of what Nick Fury’s been up to lately.

Nova #13 -Silver Surfer and Galactus show up. Go get ‘em, Rich!

Secret Invasion #2 – My pick of the week – a strong first issue, so let’s hope it keeps up.

Thunderbolts Reason in Madness – Gage takes on Norman Osborn and Venom. The art on these really lets them down, I think – and at some point I’d like to see the end of Ellis’ arc.

Young X-Men #2 – Interested enough by the first ish to continue…

Buffy #14 – Wolves at the Gate continues, hopefully with less bi-Buffy and more bi-Dracula because somehow that’s far funnier.

Conan #50 – The Barbarian bows out!

I don’t often run through the Dark Horse solicits but there were a few things that caught my eye so I figured why not?

BARB WIRE OMNIBUSReally? Are Dark Horse going to throw out all their back material in these things, or was someone actually asking for this?

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #16

I ran the Jo Chen cover a while ago (the one with the not so surprise guest star) but this is the first time I’ve seen the Georges Jeanty cover – who are these guys on the left? Am I supposed to know? Nice to see Karl Moline back for the not so surprise guest star, too…

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER “CONVERSATIONS WITH DEAD PEOPLE” BOARD

I love this solicit: “Game board for entertainment purposes only.” And the crazy people protest starts in 3…2…1…

CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #1 I’ve been a Conan follower since the new series began 4 or 5 years ago – and this is the perfect jumping off point for me. My only issue with following the trades from now on is that often with Dark Horse, the trades are more expensive than the single issues. I don’t quite understand that.

FEAR AGENT #23: I AGAINST I part 2 (of 6)

This is a book that I have heard a lot of good things about but have yet to pick up. If anyone has any advice yay or nay, let me know!

THE GOON #26

Another book that I’ve heard good stuff about but never picked up. Is it worth it? Trades or singles? Is there a good jumping on point?

GROO: HELL ON EARTH

Humor comics have never quite worked for me but again I’ve heard so many good things about it – maybe I should take a look?

HELLBOY: THE CROOKED MAN #1 (of 3)

Good grief, this is one of those posts that just begs for a beating. I admit it – I’ve never read Hellboy in any form. I did kind of like the first movie, and I’ll probably watch the second but…is the comic any good? Is there a good jumping on point?

INDIANA JONES AND THE TOMB OF THE GODS #2 (of 4)

Dark Horse really seems to do well with their licensed stuff, don’t they? Haven’t seen a new Indy comic in what, ten years? Chances are I’ll at the very least take a look at it.

MYSPACE DARK HORSE PRESENTS VOLUME 1

Lots of great creators contributing to this – but we already saw this free on MySpace, right? Now we’re supposed to pay for it? I’ll be interested to see how much this sells – should be interesting to see how it affects the Zuda model too.

REELART STUDIOS: YANKEE GIRL

So…Yankee Girl is some kind of cross between Wonder Woman and Miss America? Only with her boobs falling out?

THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN VOLUME 4

Like I said, I’m a Conan fan – these Essential style reprints any good?

STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC #31 — TURNABOUT

Here’s the thing – I said I was going to switch to trades for the Star Wars books, but they’re actually slightly more expensive than the single issues. What’s the deal with that??!

STAR WARS LEGACY #26

One of the more enjoyable SW books right now – John Ostrander really is knocking this out of the park.

STAR WARS: REBELLION #15 — VECTOR part 7 (of 12)

Vector hits the original trilogy era – and apparently Han and Chewie may finally show up in the book!

TUROK: SON OF STONE

So…this is the Dark Horse comic adaptation of the Capcom game of the Acclaim property of the old Valiant comic, huh?

Man, I miss Acclaim. Although I realize that there are only a few of us out there…

It’s a surprisingly light week for me so chances are I’ll play catch up with trade…

Action Comics #863 – The grand finale to the LSH story. I’ve enjoyed this quite a bit – but once again I’m left wondering if it wouldn’t have read better in trade.

Countdown to Final Crisis #4 – The first person stuff is behind us (and hey, it did turn out to be Kamandi’s world!) and we move to the final phase as Darkseid – now the last surviving New God – drops in on Mary Marvel.

Nightwing #123 – I’ve complained a bit about this book, but I’m still enjoying it. Not sure I’m sticking with it past Tomasi’s first arc though.

Amazing Spider-Man #555 – Zeb Wells and Chris Bachalo come on for an arc – complete with Wolverine (and, presumably, how OMD/BND fits in with New Avengers).

Secret Invasion #1 – The Invasion is here! I’m looking forward to this a lot more than I am Final Crisis. No doubt the internet will break in half when Skrulls are replacedrevealed*.

Spider-Man Family #8 – Spidey and Iron Man team-up, plus the continuation of reprints of Death and Destiny (I think) and Venom: Lethal Protector.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer #13 – So last issue had no Oz and lots of naked flesh. Wonder what this will end up doing?

*D’oh! Thanks for pointing that out, Mr Gallaher!

One sentence reviews

March 25, 2008 by

I thought that it might be a good time to catch up on comic comments and reviews – so here’s a one sentence review-a-palooza for stuff picked up in the last three weeks…

Marvel

Annihilation Conquest #5Things rumble to a conclusion as Star Lord’s Howling Commandos take a leap of faith, High Evolutionary gets a history lesson and Ultron gets an upgrade – but still no sign of Nova; fun stuff but a little stodgy and too long for its own good.

Mighty Avengers #10 – Nice retro feel to the issue if a little overplayed with the dot printing effect – but I really don’t like Bendis’ take on Doom and I don’t like the Sentry period.

Avengers The Initiative #10 – This book gets better and better, including nice character moments amidst the chaos of KIA’s attack on Camp Hammond – and I loved that last page!

Captain America #36 – Bucky continues to grow into his new role and the Skull’s plan gets even more complex – Brubaker and his
artists knock this book out of the park every month.

Captain Marvel #4 – An improvement on previous issues as Marvel (assuming that’s who he actually is) finally takes on a less passive role; Lee Weeks is a great talent and needs some higher profile projects.

Fantastic Four #555 – Millar and Hitch’s take on the FF isn’t my favorite, especially as regards the Torch, but this is still pretty entertaining – if not as flat-out action-packed as it might have been.

Incredible Hercules #115 – Simply awesome – who would have thought that Hercules would be headlining the best, most entertaining book that Marvel puts out?

The Last Defenders #1 – Pretty good start to the series, although I’m not really sure where its going to go with this team of anti-Defenders that Yandroth seems to be about to pull together…

Nova #11 – Rich Rider’s been a personal fave of mine for years, and this latest book is firing on all cylinders – plus the real (to me, anyway) Warlock is back!

Amazing Spider-Man #552-554 – Lord knows that I’m no fan of One More Day, but the rebooted Spidey books have been uniformly good and Bob Gale and Phil Jiminez’s ‘Freak’ arc is no exception.

Thunderbolts #119 – Ellis and Deodato bring a lot to the table but no matter how much I enjoy this book, I can’t help but feel it will read better as a trade.

Uncanny X-Men #496 – Scott and Emma’s vacation was fun but the real joy here is seeing the Logan-Kurt-Piotr interaction; this feels like the first time the three of them have just hung out in…oh, three hundred issues or so?
DC

Batman and the Outsiders #5 – Despite an interesting cast and solid creative team, this book has really failed to come together so far – and I’m really not sure about having the Dibnys as body-hopping allies; I was hoping for something a little more detective-based from them…

Birds of Prey #116 - This is the first time that I got the impression that Sean McKeever might be able to handle the book, as he produced some good Zinda/Huntress stuff – of course, he only has one issue left.

Booster Gold #7 – No real surprises this time round but nicely crafted stuff with lots of nods to continuity – although I do wonder if that very thing doesn’t make it a bit of a niche book that basically appeals only to fanboys (and girls).

The Brave and the Bold #11 – While this book can be hit and miss for me, this issue was a hit as Ultraman and Superman are forced to team-up by Earth 3′s Mixyezpitelik
– after a gratuitous fight scene, of course.

Countdown to Final Crisis #8-6 – Okay, at this point you either hate it or tolerate it – and I tolerate it for what it is; an ambitious project that’s spottily executed.

Countdown to Adventure #7 – Now this is much more enjoyable, with all the threads involving 52‘s space-faring heroes dovetailing nicely, and even the Forerunner backup is okay.

Countdown Presents: Lord Havok and the Extremists #5 – This has proved to be surprisingly enjoyable, with lots of swipes (or homages) to Marvel in the book’s flashbacks as it barrels towards its inevitable bloody conclusion; I wouldn’t mind seeing more of this world at some point.

Death of the New Gods #7 – I’ve never been the biggest Fourth World fan so I’m probably not the core audience here, but this has been relatively enjoyable if a little overlong; six issues would have been just fine, thanks.

Gotham Underground #9 – This book only works if you ignore the fact that Batman, Nightwing, Robin and even the Question are pretty damned busy elsewhere the whole time this is supposed to be happening – but luckily there’s so much double-dealing and backstabbing that you never really have time to think about it.

Green Lantern #28 – I admit that I enjoyed the Sinestro Corps war a lot, but the additions of all these colored lanterns isn’t filling me with joy – it all just seems a little bit too contrived.

Green Lantern Corps #22 – Not the best issue; fill-ins featuring the backstory of emotionless dull characters that weren’t that interesting before they got turned into robots don’t exactly fill me with joy.

Justice League of America #19 – For a book that should be the line’s flagship title, a whole lot of nothing seems to happen pretty damn often, and the team too often end up looking like chumps.

Justice League: The New Frontier Special #1 – Please get Darwyn Cooke to take over the regular League book.

Nightwing #142 – While the book is better than it has been in years, I’m still not sold on Dick being the guy who knows everyone in the DCU superhero community, from the JSA through Superman – I think he works best when he’s a little more grounded.

Robin #172 – Solid, fun stuff – and watch out for that last page, it’s a doozy!

Salvation Run #5 – To say that this book is uneven is an understatement – but at least its showing some character development for some villains here, even if it doesn’t make much sense.

Superman #674 – Renato Guedes is a welcome addition to the team – its just a pity that he and Busiek aren’t going to get too much time to work together.

Wonder Woman #18 – Gail Simone was supposed to save this book, but it still feels a little like its bouncing around without too much direction, sadly.

Dark Horse

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #12 – I’ve been pretty vocal on my blog about the developments in these pages, so I’ll say no more here.

Serenity #1 – While any project involving the crew of the good ship Serenity is always welcome, this unfortunately doesn’t live up to expectation despite great art from Will Conrad.

Star Wars Legacy #21 - Not the greatest issue I’ve ever read, focusing as it does on minor supporting characters that don’t really interest me.

Star Wars Rebellion #12 – This book wildly fluctuates in quality; I enjoy it but thats probably because I’m a huge Star Wars nerd – I don’t think that it’s as accessible as it should be in spite of the familiar settings and characters.
Red 5
Atomic Robo #6 – Best new comic that I’ve read in quite some time; fun and engaging with a touch of pathos, you should pick up the inevitable trade if this passed you by.
And there you are!

It looks like it could be a huge week thanks to DC if I’m not careful…

Batman and the Outsiders #5 – I know that the book stumbled out of the gate but that’s not really an excuse for virtually nothing of note happening in the first four issues. It has until #6 to prove itself.

Batman: The Killing Joke Special Edition – It occurs to me that I don’t actually own this. An $18 version isn’t one I’ll be picking up, but I’m just saying.
Birds of Prey #116 – This one…I wish I could tell you that I’m looking forward to Tony Bedard taking over the book. I wish I could tell you that I thought it would be saved by the new Platinum Flats direction. I wish I could tell you that.
Brave and the Bold #11 – I’ve said it before; I’m here through the end of this Megistus malarkey but that’s it.
Catwoman #77 – Only picking it up because it ties into Salvation Run. So I’m picking up a mediocre tie-in to a mediocre series. Sometimes I have to wonder why…
Countdown to Final Crisis #6 – In spite of everything I still hold out some hope that this may work out okay in the end.
Death of the New Gods #7 – Ditto.
Flash #238 – Sigh. No offence to outgoing Mark Waid or incoming Tom Peyer, but this really needs a fresh start and some new blood. Its just floundering right now.
Justice League of America #19 – And speaking of floundering…
Robin #172 – Finally a book that I’m out and out enjoying!
Tangent: Superman’s Reign #1 – I’m not picking it up but I do have a soft spot for the Tangent universe. Fortunately that prologue thing in JLA a while back soured me on this.
Amazing Spider-Man #554 – I’m slowly getting used to the status quo – and enjoying Spidey more than I have in probably the last five or six years.
Captain America #36 – Still fantastic but I’m beginning to wonder if it wouldn’t be better if I jumped to trades.
Captain Marvel #4 – So-so, if a little dull. I don’t see Marvel sticking around too long after Secret Invasion, but at least Lee Weeks is doing great work and that Dodson variant is fantastic.
Incredible Hercules #115 – Bringing the awesome. Favorite comic of the moment!
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic #26 – I know that I’ve said that I sometimes have trouble keeping straight what’s going on in each book, but I still enjoy them a lot when I read them. Dark Horse trades tend to be priced similarly to original issues so I don’t think I’m losing anything by reading them monthly.
Wow, its like that $30 a week thing never even existed, huh?

So…if you haven’t read Buffy this week (or any media outlet) you may want to turn away…
…now.

‘Wow’ indeed.
Buffy’s gone gay.
Only she hasn’t – and apparently Satsu (her bedfellow) knows it:
Well that’s pretty understanding of her.
After all, you might think that Satsu might get a bit emotional about Buffy having sex with her, what with Satsu being in love with Buffy and all that. Hey, last issue they even had a big talk where Buffy said she thought it was flattering but nothing was going to happen because she wasn’t gay.
So much for that. But let’s not think that this could possibly be about Satsu…not when its so obviously going to be all about Buffy.

Good lord, she doesn’t stop, does she? Is she always this insecure after sex? I mean, okay, so the first guy she slept with turned eeeevil and made her insecure about sex. And the second guy turned out to be a complete ass. But the third guy was pretty solid right up till he got addicted to having his blood sucked after Buffy gave him the cold shoulder. And I guess the third guy was kind of just screwing her because he too was eeeevil (kinda).
Hmm.
Maybe it actually is all about Buffy…
There’s a manual?
Does it have pictures and diagrams and stuff?
Oh that’s nice. Buffy was amazing. And she let Satsu do stuff to her. At least now she has a fallback plan for the next time she forgets to buy Willow a birthday present.

Okay.
Here’s the thing: I don’t like this development one bit.
I’m all for gay and lesbian characters in comics and TV. There should probably be more. And I get that Buffy particularly has always been a show about growing up.
But there’s no way that this feels like a natural development, no matter what Joss Whedon says, especially after the last issue where Satsu’s feelings for Buffy were actually dealt with in  a mature manner.
And frankly in a show/comic where one of the main characters was gay it feels like overkill.
And yes, I know that Buffy isn’t gay, I know she’s just apparently experimenting, but it still feels like a forced move to grab attention – a ratings grab, if it were TV.
So I’m on record as not being a fan of the move – unless anyone can convince me otherwise?

Let’s see what’s out there -

Atom #21 – Rick Remender and Pat Oliffe are an interesting choice for the book, but I’m not sure I’m going to stick with it. I suspect that its not long for this world in any case.

Countdown Presents: Lord Havok and the Extremists #5 – I hate to leave a mini part done. That’s why I finished the Crime Bible, that’s why I’ll finish this.

Countdown to Adventure #7 – This on the other hand is a mini that’s a whole crapload of fun.
Countdown to Final Crisis #8 – This week: Jimmy Olsen whales on Darkseid whilst singing ‘There Can Be Only One’.

Green Lantern #28 – Red Lanterns!

Justice League: New Frontier Special – Of course I’m getting it. The original series was fantastic even if the movie didn’t quite live up to it.

Nightwing #142 – I’m on board for the first arc but already Tomasi’s habit of putting Dick at the dead centre of the DCU is grating on me.

Amazing Spider-Man #552 – Hey, Spidey’s back. I think that this is Bob Gale’s arc. I loved his arc on Daredevil a few years back and, y’know, Back to the Future, so I’m up for this.

Secret Invasion Saga – Basically a free flyer but okay.

Uncanny X-Men #496 – Last issue was fun; lets see if this stays on target.

Buffy #12 – Wolves at the Gate kicks off…and someone is supposed to make a comeback to the Buffyverse. Hmmm. Wolves…comeback…wonder who that could be?

Star Wars Legacy #21 – Fairly sure I only picked up #20 last week so I don’t see this happening.

The Pull List – 20th Feb 2008

February 19, 2008 by

Its a big DC week this week -

Batman & the Outsiders #4 – You know, I want to like this book but so far its just been okay. This ish, Green Arrow comes on board and clashes with Batgirl. I want to enjoy it – but I think its a maybe at best for me.

Birds of Prey #115 – Ironically, news that McKeever’s run is to be cut short is the only thing making me pick up the book. The title’s been in a slump since Gail Simone left – and even slightly before that if I’m honest.

Brave and the Bold #10 -I’m sticking through the Megistus storyline to #12 then bailing, probably. I like the concept but not keen on the execution so much.

Catwoman #76 – Last issue was my first in a while and it was okay. Sticking through the Salvation Run crossover.

Countdown to Final Crisis #10 – Not long to go.

Death of the New Gods #6 – Given that the New Gods will feature heavily in Final Crisis, I’m feeling kind of gypped here.

Flash #237 – Its a fill in. Super.

Justice League of America #18 – The Suicide Squad shows up and throws down. Have to say, this hasn’t been knocking my socks off.

Robin #171 – Finally, something I’m looking forward to. The fact that its taken nine issues this week to get to one that I actively want to pick up is kind of sad.

Amazing Spider-Man #551 – Last couple of issues have been fun; I’m liking the new creative teams a lot.

Incredible Hercules #114 – Looking forward to this one too!

Mighty Avengers #9 – And this; three for three from Marvel!

Plus whatever Conan or Star Wars books come out this week, and the excellent Abyss from Red5 if that comes out. And, er, maybe Youngblood… Big week, but not one that I’m really that enthused about all told – that’s not a good sign….
