Posts Tagged ‘ Dynamite ’

It looks like this is going to be a small week despite all of those Marvel books I would like to check out, but I’m holding back:

Amazing Spider-Man #598 – So. This was the plan for Harry’s return? Interesting.

Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia #1 – Call me curious. I’ve heard good things about this crossover so I’m going to check it out. Plus, it’s Matt Fraction. How could you go wrong?

Dynamo 5 #22 – I’m so behind on this series. I need to get back to reading it. The comics are sitting here; I just keep pushing them off to the side. I’m so mean.

G.I. Joe #6 – This series continues to be my guilty pleasure because it just makes me happy to be reading comics. Plus, that Robert Atkins is a really good artist!

Gotham Sirens #1 – While I’m not super excited about this book, I’m curious.

Fusion #2 – I liked the first issue of this Top Cow/Marvel crossover. It doesn’t hurt that Abnet and Lanning are writing it.

Ms. Marvel #40 –
This is just one of those Marvel books that are so good and very few people are talking about it. We’re just over the three year mark and it’s just getting better. Brian Reed is awesome!

Predator #1 – I’m a fan of the Predator movies (yes, even the second one) and I’ve enjoyed a number of the comic books that have come out. I really enjoyed the new ALIENS series that’s out by Dark Horse and I’m hoping this is more of the same. It’s written by John Arcudi and drawn by Javier Saltares. What could go wrong?

Proof #21 – This book is Rich and Chris Approved! Go buy it!

Red Sonja #45 – Here’s another one of those Brian Reed series that has a great female lead that doesn’t take crap from anyone. Good stuff.

Well, another week and another crap load of comics that I want to read and will be excited if I ever get through them all! If you’re following me over at Twitter (and shame on you if you’re not) I posted a series of posts and replies to my need to cut back on reading Marvel and DC comics in order to spend more time on all the other books out there that I’d like to try out. While I still enjoy Marvel and DC, I need a break from them and explore what else is out there. So, my hope is that this list will be much smaller, but you never know until you start looking. So, let’s get to it:

Amber Atoms #4 - I’ve got this one on my list, but I’m behind on my reading. I’ve got the issues, but #1 is the only one I’ve read. It was a good issue which is why I keep buying it. I’ll get to reading them soon.

Body Bags Vol 1 Fathers Day TP - I’m a big fan of Jason Pearson, and BODY BAGS has always been a good read. I pick up every one-shot and miniseries that comes out, but I’ve got to support Pearson and buy the trade.

Bomb Queen Presents All Girl Comics One Shot - Call this one a guilty pleasure. This series of miniseries are SO wrong, but funny. Kristen Simon is writing this one, but I’ve got all the faith in the world that she’ll bring it!

Boys Herogasm #2 - I read the first issue of this book and really didn’t know what to think of it. Its REALLY over the top, even for Ennis.

Captain America #600 - I’m buying it because I’m a huge fan of this series and the creators involved. I can’t say if I like what’s happening with the word that Steve’s coming back, but I’ll hold ‘judgement’ until I read it all. Brubaker hasn’t steered us wrong yet with this book. I trust that it will be entertaining.

Executive Assistant Iris #1 – Say what you will about the name of this Aspen book, the zero issue was good! I’m really looking forward to this new series.

G.I. Joe: Cobra #4 - This issue concludes the current story and miniseries. Chuckles has my vote for character of the year!

Invincible #63 - I’m trying to find that point where I stop reading the monthly issues and switch to trades, but I can’t. Each issue is SO good!

Invincible Iron Man #14 - I hate I love this book so much! Fraction has made me love reading Iron Man again. Thank you!

Man With No Name The Good The Bad And The Uglier #11 - I enjoy this book, but its not a stand out book. Its good, but almost worth waiting until its collected to read.

Masquerade #4 - I’ve finally gotten all my PROJECT SUPERPOWER comics out and ready to read. Funny. I’ve only read the first two or three issues of the initial series and I’m buying up all these spin-offs. Yes. I have a problem!

Power Girl #2 - I’m a fan of Amanda Conner. Anything she draws I pick up. No question. I even bought a copy of MAD Magazine because she did a story in it. I’m devoted. Ha!
Project Superpowers Chapter 2 #0 – Its a freakin’ dollar, folks! Check it out!

Well, this is still a long list of books. Ugh. One of these days I’ll cut it back. I promise!
For those of you heading out to Heroes Con this weekend, I’ll be there on Friday. Drop me a line at chris@thecomicaddiction.com or www.twitter.com/chrispartin and let me know if you’ll be around!

Later!

Hey, everyone! Its been a while since I’ve posted my pull list. I didn’t want all of you to think I had given up. Rich’s been so great to let me post here from time to time, but when you’re running your own review site, producing seven episodes of our podcasts a month, not to mention family and school stuff – I get busy. LOL. But we’r ehere to talk comics! What am I grabbing this week? Let’s see…

Absolution #0 – I don’t normally pick up Avatar titles mainly because I just don’t have any connection to the creative teams. This series is being written by Christos Gage and I’m a fan of his. I’ll check out this issue and see if it grabs me. If not, this may be the only issue I get.

Action Comics #878 – I’m having a lot of fun with this book. Its strange to be reading this book without Superman, but the further we get from the Superman issues the more this series feels like its suppose to be.

Amazing Spider-Man #597 – The “American Son” arc has been pretty good. I’m always a sucker for a Harry Osborn story. I’m really interested to see what happens to Peter when the Dark Avengers discover him – because you know they will!

Batman #687 – I am so excited to get back to Batman. Last week’s BATMAN AND ROBIN #1 was fun, but I want to see what Winick is going to do with this series. I really enjoyed his first run on the series, but can lightning strike twice?

Booster Gold #21 – I haven’t been picking up this series for a while. The only thing I want to point out is the Blue Beetle back up in this issue. Not sure if that’s enough for me to pick it up.

Buck Rogers #1 – Dynamite Entertainment has been grabbing up so many properties this last year or so. BUCK ROGERS seems to be an odd choice, but after the zero issue I’m on board. This is definitely not the hokie book I thought it was going to be. Straight up sci-fi action!

GI Joe Origins #4 – Every month IDW puts out three great G.I. JOE titles that are so different from one another. I’m curious to see how they all come together in the next month or so.

Green Lantern Corps #37 – Come on – its a riot on Oa! What more do you want in a GL book?

Proof #20 – I’m behind on my reading with this book only because I love reading several issues at a time. I like that ‘trade’ feel without waiting for the trade.

Red Robin #1 – So… who is Red Robin? I think we all have a good idea who it is, but I’ll play along as I pick up this issue.

Savage Dragon #149 – One more issue before #150 and this book continues to pick up steam. This is probably my favorite book I’m reading right now.

Sherlock Holmes #2 – Here’s another one of those properties that Dynamite picked up that I just wasn’t sure what would become of them. The first issue was so good! I’m standing in line for this one, folks!

Soulfire New World Order #2 – SOULFIRE is one of those titles that I just got hooked into from the very first issue I read. The recent miniseries that Aspen have been releasing have been pretty good stories with amazing art and well worth while of checking out.

Unknown #2 – Remember that week where there were three “un” titles? Well, we’re back for Round 2 and the first is UNKNOWN from Boom! Studios. I really liked this first issue so I knew I had to check out the second. The story is a detective mystery with a bit of the science fiction/mystical/fantasy. Its a good mix.

Unthinkable #2 – This is Boom’s other “un” book and is probably the one based in reality the most. Last issue we got to see our lead character be a part of a government think tank which eventually closed shop. Now some of those scenarios they thought up are happening. What to do? What to do?

War Of Kings Savage World Of Skaar – I’m reading WAR OF KINGS, but is this necessary? Just curious.

X-Men Forever #1 – If you’ve been over to my site (www.thecomicaddiction.com) then you know we’ve been on a kick with this series. We had a podcast interview with Chris Claremont. Marvel gave us an advance look at this particular issue (which I REALLY enjoyed). We started up a Annotations and Insights series to help people figure out what’s happening in the series. I was skeptical of this series at first, but I’m on board now. Good fun comics.

Wow! Another HUGE week for me. I’m not sure I’ll grab them all, but you never know until you’re standing in the comic shop staring at all those new books… very tempting!

Last week I didn’t have a chance to put together a pull list. I would have forgotten again if I hadn’t come by the blog earlier to see what Rich had posted over the weekend and saw his pull list. Last week’s list was a fairly small one with some decent books. I’m excited about this week. Let’s dive in shall we?

Amazing Spider-Man #592 - I’m still picking up random issues of this series, but I may have to pick them up more regularly because this is the Spider-Man I remember reading back in the 80s that got me hooked. The big reveal last issue was AWESOME! Makes me glad I’m reading comics.

American McGees Grimm #1 - I’ve heard a little buzz about this book which I’m glad I did because I didn’t know anything about it. I like Dwight MacPherson’s writing and Grant Bond’s art. I’m at least picking up this first issue and giving it a try.

Avengers (Initiative/Mighty/New) - Really?! Did we need three of the four Avenger books to come out on the same day?! Sheesh!!

Battlestar Galactica Final Five #1 - While I haven’t watched all the BSG series I have been reading all of the comics. This one comes straight from the writers of the series and give us more on the Final Five. Looks good.

Buck Rogers #0 - Shut up! This one looks pretty cool and its only 25-cents!

Detective Comics #853 - Hey! I remember this series. I wonder if the second part of this story is going to be as good considering the looooong delay?

Dynamo 5 #21 - Between this and Invincible, one of them is the best super-hero series being told right now. If you’ve not checked out this series, there was a zero issue a couple months back that was a dollar. Go get that and then pick up the first trade (it was only $9.99 for seven issues). When you do that, get back to me and tell me how much you love this series.

G.I. Joe Cobra #2 – This is on the list, but I could have sworn it came out two weeks ago, didn’t it?

Invincible #61 - Hey, look! Last issue was insane and this issue the clean up and rebuilding beings. This book is still in my ‘top of the pile’ list every month. Great comic!

Red Sonja #43 - This ones a weakness of mine. I’m a few issues behind on my reading, but I grab it every month. This is also my one series I pick up all the variants as I’m able to. This one has at least 3 covers! Whew.

Resistance GN - Did you read this short lived series from Wildstorm 5-6 years ago? It was awesome! Written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray it told a great futuristic story. Now, don’t know if this GN is a collected edition of that series or if this is a new story. If its a collection – get it! If its a new story – get it! If you like comics – get it! So, go get it!

Savage Dragon #147 - Just too much goodness this week – its going to kill me!! Overlord’s coming back, and if you know who that is then you know you’re in for a crazy ride!

Supergirl #40 - While still not in my top ten, this series has been consistently good since Sterling Gates and Jamal Igle have come on board.

Viking #1 - Call this pick the “Love of Northlanders” pick. I really like Northlanders a lot and I want to read more Viking stories. Wait! Are Vikings the new Zombies? Don’t tell Marvel!

This week is INSANE!!!! That’s all I’ve got to say.

TV to Comic

September 4, 2008 by

The translation of television to comic doesn’t always work too well. Whether it’s a combination of character likenesses, licensing approvals or whatever else, the comics rarely feel like the TV shows.

In fact, it usually seems to work better when the TV shows are off the air.
The X-Files had a decent run through Topps comics in the 90s – and Topps also ran Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess books at the time, but where are Topps now?
These days, licenses seem to be split between IDW (AngelSpike, Doctor Who and Star Trek) and Dynamite (Battlestar Galactica, Xena, Highlander, Army of Darkness), with Dark Horse picking up Star Wars, Firefly/Serenity and Buffy (of course) and Wildstorm snagging the occasional one – like Supernatural, X-Files and the long-rumored but never-confirmed Veronica Mars.
Thing is, I can rarely get into them. I want to, because I like the shows that they’re based on but they rarely feel ‘real’ to me. There’s the sense that it doesn’t really matter what happens in the comic because it will never, ever ‘count’.
The exception to the rule seems to be Buffy and Angel – and that’s probably helped by the fact that they involve the shows creators in them. But when you’re reading Battlestar Galactica, it seems unlikely that anything there will ever carry over into the show.
By and large, I just can’t get into them. Are they aimed at a different audience to regular comics readers? Does that audience ever cross into mainstream comics? Is there a way to get them too?

Sorry, wrong Doom

July 21, 2008 by

With all due apologies to Djimon Hounsou (who I’d actually like to see as Black Panther), I’m not really interested in a Thulsa Doom movie.

I have little interest in seeing this Doom on screen.

However, this Doom I am!

Get rid of Julian McMahon and recast Doom, retelling his origin apart from the FF and I’ll be a happy man.

Never let it be said that I cannot influence Hollywood…just like Robert Rodriguez can influence you with his scary hand…

Obviously they couldn’t come out and say that’s why they split up, but it obviously is.
Now if he’s looking for a young-ish (20-30 year old) Sonja I’ve got a couple of ideas for people who might suit the role a little better.

Like Adrianne Palicki –
or Ali Larter –

Both are not-unattractive women of athletic build and height and, oh yes, can actually act

Thanks to better half for the heads up!

Red Sonja = Rose McGowan?

June 29, 2008 by

Dear Robert Rodriguez,

I like your work, always have, and appreciate that you have a great eye for action and amazing film-making skills.

Still, let me make this plain to you: Rose McGowan has the acting ability of Keanu Reeve’s less expressive sister. I know that you are, apparently, engaged to her and while I’ll concede that she’s attractive and I’m sure that she’s a lovely person, that is honestly no reason to inflict her on those of us who may otherwise enjoy a Red Sonja movie.

Having a Charmed-addicted wife and, as a result, having had the misfortune to watch a few years’ worth of episodes of the show I can honestly say that she was probably the least talented person working on television at that time.

Also…

…does not equal this…

…although I guess at least she won’t be shy about wearing a chainmail bikini.

Yours,

Rich

As per usual last night I made my way to the store and picked up a fresh batch of books -

52 #46 – Damn -when Black Adam goes all out, Black Adam goes all out. I’m glad that he’s rumored to be getting a new series post-52 (Frank Tieri, please?) but I wonder, post-Oolong Island, post-JSA what state he’ll be in…Also, is it just me or did the reveal in the solicits that the upcoming Outsiders/Checkmate crossover takes place on Oolong and deals with Egg-Fu take some of the woomph out of this issue? Lots of New Gods/Apokolips references from Veronica Cale, and a bit of traction on the Luthor story were all welcome too.

The Brave and the Bold #2 – I liked it, but this felt very, very old-fashioned again. I can’t see the book surviving too long post-Perez if something isn’t done to make it a little more contempary. Also, I really really didn’t need to see Supergirl hitting on Green Lantern – even if Hal’s reaction (“17. 17. 17.”) was priceless.

The Flash #10 – I’m not sure that the pace is helping here; Guggenheim throws in Inertia, Zoom, Captain Cold, Heatwave and another surprise ‘villain’ in the mix in this issue; Zoom and Cold especially deserve more focus than this issue gave. And I’m still not sure that Bart’s a good Flash – and saddling him with Wally’s rogues seems forced. But maybe people said the same thing when Wally took over…

Justice Society of America #4 – There are no words for how awesome this book is. Whereas the JLA relaunch has bored the crap out of me, this has hit every note right in two less issues than that one. This issue, Wildcat (or Wildcats), Damage and Red Tornado all got a chance to shine – plus there’s some Obsidian action as he and Sand spark off some new plotpoints (Huntress? Not on this Earth…). Even the threat promise of a crossover with the aforementioned League doesn’t put me off next issue.

Birds of Prey #104 – I was going to leave it on the shelf, but I made the mistake of flicking through it…and that last page. It can’t be…can it? I want a certain ring-slinger to show up, stat! And I’m not the only one.

After the Cape #1 – Impulse purchase based on an amzing cover and very nice-looking interior art, plus I remembered reading something about it a while back somewhere. I hadn’t remembered Jim Valentino being involved, so that was another plus. Didn’t get to reading it last night but will do tonight.

Amazing Spider-Man #539 – Pretty much what I expected; no surprises at all, which was disappointing. It’s a perfectly well-crafted story with great work from Ron Garney, but all in all it fell a little flat.

Ms Marvel #13 – This was good. Nice interplay between Carol and Tony Stark (and man, he had that coming!) and a nice new direction for the book. Glad to see Arana on her feet again so soon, too – guess she’s not a WiR after all…. Also good to see some new supporting cast members – although some of them have vaguely familiar names. And as I’m still rooting for a Carol/Wonder Man hook-up I’m hoping that this new love interest is as sleazy as I think he is.

X-Men #197 – It’s good to see Carey concentrating on some of the lesser names in his team – like Lady Mastermind this issue – especially as I think there’s another roster shake-up coming soon. It’s also good to see a book outside of Cable & Deadpool acknowledging the existence of Providence – speaking of which, wasn’t C&D supposed to be out this week?

X-Factor #17 – I’ve said that I’m getting bored with it – and I am – but I still think it’s a very well put-together book. Undecided if this is my last issue or not at this point.

Civil War: Battle Damage Report – Wow – those last few pages renewed a bunch of copyrights, eh?

Red Sonja #20 – Yes, I know it came out a few weeks back. And I know I had righteously dropped it. But writing this yesterday reminded me just how much I like the character…dammit…

Dream Crossovers

March 21, 2007 by

Dynamite Entertainment have acquired the Terminator 2 license according to reports yesterday – off-topic, that makes me wonder if Dark Horse still have the Terminator license, and if anyone at all would want to license Terminator 3

Anyway, incoming writer Simon Furman was appropriately enthusiastic and hinted at a crossover later this year with another of licensed property, not-very-cryptically saying:

“We’re speaking excitedly about the potential cross-over option that should
happen in later 2007, but there is much more to the story than meets the eye.”

So it’s Transformers, then? Hardly a surprise, given Furman’s pedigree on that book and the fact that there’s a movie out this year…

But that started me thinking about licensed properties that could crossover…

Buffy – Angel – This is a no-brainer, as long as IDW and Dark Horse could pull it together. It won’t involve as much manouevreing as the TV shows requred in their later seasons, and it would sell like gangbusters, especially if you got that Whedon fella involved.

Conan – Red Sonja – Again, a no-brainer. Sonja is a literary off-spring of Conan anyway, and they have quite the history and the same shared world, so can’t we all just get along?

Painkiller Jane – Darkman – It’d be the woman with no pain against the man with no face. Think of the bandages!

Army of Darkness – Red Sonja – Ash has a tendency to end up travelling dimensions and worlds, so why not dump in Hyboria for a spell? Those pesky Deadites would make an obvious ally for Kulan Gath, and wouldn’t we all love to see Sonja’s reaction to Ash hitting on her?

Highlander-Red Sonja - Throw Connor into the middle of the Hyborian Age with the Kurgan in tow and watch Sonja try to decipher his accent. Much swordplay ensues!

Buffy-Army of Darkness - I could see Ash falling under the spell of the Buffster, totally not getting that Willow’s gay, irritating Giles with his knowledge of an obscure ancient text and bonding with Xander. Awesome.

Spike-Army of Darkness – Spike vs Ash. Do I have to explain how great the sarcasm-fest that followed would be?

Buffy-Red Sonja – Well the First was a desert-based Slayer, right? Why not have her be an ally (or perhaps an enemy) of Sonja, and then throw Buffy in the mix? Two strong women fighting in loincloth bikini armor…I think this sells itself, right?

Highlander-Lone Ranger – By my reckoning, Connor – and Duncan for that matter – was around in the 1880s…so why not have him and the Lone Ranger cross paths on the trail of another Immortal? How would the Ranger deal with someone you can’t shoot or hang?

Spike/Angel – Lone Ranger – Angel, newly ensouled, hits the American west with an oblivious Spike in tow – who then runs afoul of a certain masked vigilante…

I tell you, the possibilities here are endless…

Quick rundown

July 31, 2006 by

Last week’s books, very quickly, as I have a lot on today -

52 #13 – Huge improvement – Black Adam, the new Isis, Ralph, Cassie…and Devem as the head of the Cult of Conner? Now why does Dev-Em sound familiar?

Batman #655 – Okay, I’m weak. I caved. Morrison and Andy Kubert proved to good to pass up; a great beginning to what I hope is a fantastic run. Good stuff.

Action Comics #841 – Another good issue; obviously he’s back, but is he the real deal? Lots of heroes show up to check the Man of Steel is for real – and we get the best Nightwing in ages. Damn shame its not in his own book…

Highlander #0 – Wow. Another Dynamite book I won’t be picking up. The one thing that really irks me about this book, the TV show and the sequels in general is the fact that we still have all these immortals running around after the Gathering. There can be only one. Sigh. Didn’t anybody read the tagline?

Annihilation: Nova & Super-Skrull #1 -I’m behind the curve on these but figured I’d pick em up. And I’m glad I did – both are excellent reads. I’ll be getting some more this week.

New Avengers #22 – Bendis has the man love for Luke Cage – I get it. Seriously, this is a good book, and the best Luke Cage I’ve read in a while, and his showdown with SHIELD is classic.

Black Panther #18 – I picked this up because of Civil War only, but I kind of enjoyed it. I’m curious how all the outlaw heroes got to Wakanda, but it’s a pretty good issue none the less. And Spider-Man’s confrontation with Man-Ape was great.

Captain America #20 – Another solid issue, if a little bit slower than others recently. Still, this is one of Marvel’s best books right now.

Front Line #4 – Oh dear. The Green Goblin’s back, Speedball’s powers are on the way back, and Atlanteans are still being sneaky. Another solid issue.

Civil War: Young Avengers & Runaways #1 – Zeb Wells is a very versatile writer – from last year’s New Warriors, to his overlooked Spider-Man/Dr Octopus Year One to this – he’s really proving his mettle here. I haven’t been reading Runaways since the relaunch but I had no problem with this book – and both teams were well characterised. Good book – and much better than the X-Men CW mini so far…

Daredevil #87 – Okay, so I kinda called one mystery here and another one here - and I’m still not disappointed. This continues to be Marvel’s best ongoing – there, I’ve said it – and I’m here for the long haul.

Amazing Spider-Man #534 – Spidey’s having doubts but that doesn’t stop him facing off with Cap…a good issue (continuity points aside) that really makes plain what Spidey’s going to be doing in the main title – I see a side-switching coming…

Wolverine #44 – another solid issue, and with Namor showing up on the last page next ish promises to be a doozy. Although I am slightly concerned about Damage Control. From solicits and the location of the mystery business men’s office and their conversation (about Nitro being a rainmaker) it looks like they have been causing disasters to stay in business…its an interesting twist and its not like I have a lot invested in them, but I kinda liked the idea of them being a humorous side of the MU…Ah well…

X-Men #189 – Another excellent issue in the X-Men resurgence. Good stuff all round, and Bachalo seems to be back on form.
