After what felt like a long wait on the movie’s facebook page, with plenty of people joining up just to point out they thought the movie would be crap, the first trailer for this year’s X-Men: First Class is now live…

I think it looks promising enough, but there’s not really a lot of substance to the trailer. Nice to weave in a few shots from the first movies though. Call me cautiously optimistic for now.

More X-Men: First Class Pics

January 19, 2011 by

More X-Men: First Class pics have shown up over at the LA Times along with an interesting article including a great quote from director Matthew Vaughn:

“With ‘Green Lantern,’ I don’t know about that one, I couldn’t get my head around the trailer, to be honest … look, I will say the following: X-Men as a brand is bigger than Captain America, Thor and the Green Lantern, all put together.”

I think he may be right, actually, as far as the general public is concerned but it remains to be seen if the

Anyway, pictures!

Swingin’ Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) and Emma Frost (January Jones) get cosy somewhere which may just be the Hellfire Club:

Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lensher (Michael Fassbender) start a chess game that may just last through until they’re old men:

And, finally, Xavier, Lensher and company (including Banshee over on the left and a pre-furry Beast at the back in the form of About A Boy‘s Nicholas Hoult) look all pensive, maybe like they’re eyeing up some property for the location of a future school or something:

In spite of doubts about this I have to admit I’m starting to look forward to it.

A class pic of X-Men: First Class has surfaced in low res on the internet:

(EDITED: Now in Higher res – click on the picture below or here to embiggen it)

I make that as (L-R) Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggart, January Jones as Emma Frost, Jason Flemyng as Azazel, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Lucas Till as Havok, Zoe Kravitz as Angel, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, and James McAvoy as Professor Xavier.

What can we take away from this?

First, Beast is blue and angry; Jason Flemyng is red and looks a little bit like the devil (dear lord, please not the ‘actual’ devil like in The Draco); the X-Men used to wear black and yellow just like the original comics X-Men (only the outfits look a little more like the redesigned New X-Men gear); Magneto and Mystique were on the team; Lucas Till’s Havok looks like a douchebag; Michael Fassbender looks like Don Draper; and, oh, yes, January Jones is not an unattractive woman.

I’m sure there’s more to come…

It seems that Alice Eve is out of the upcoming X-Men First Class just weeks after I looked at some pictures and decided that yes, she’d make a pretty good Emma Frost.

So, goodbye Alice…but hello the really rather spectacular January Jones!

I’m surprised that Jones landed the role if only because she seems to be keeping a low profile during Mad Men‘s run – but in all honesty I consider this an upgrade in the acting department (not that I have much to judge Eve’s acting on…)

And let’s face it, in looks alone Jones matches Frost’s porcelain blonde perfectly.

Also on the cast list – Zoe Kravitz as Angel (presumably Angel Salvadore) who, according to google, dated Ben Foster, the other Angel from X-Men: The Last Stand. Spooky.

Between Jones, Oliver Platt, James McAvoy and Kevin Bacon, I’m starting to get the feeling this could actually be rather good…

John Tyler Christopher has been doing some great stuff recently, and I thought that it was worth pointing out.

His deviant art page and his website are both worth checking out!

Alice Eve is Emma Frost…

June 29, 2010 by

…probably, at least according to several online sources.

Then again a few weeks ago word on the street (I live in a world where this kind of information is passed along by seedy informants lurking in alleys looking for their next fix) was that Rosamund Pike would be trying to fill Emma’s corset, although she’s now linked with Moira MacTaggert.

I have to say, though, that Ms Eve would seem to fill out that corset a little better…

And yes, there is an argument that this post was just a blatant excuse for pictures of Alice Eve in her scanties.

And I’m okay with that.

There are some reports that Rosamund Pike is up for the role of Emma Frost in the upcoming X-Men: First Class movie.

I’m even more confused by this than ever. I was under the impression that Fox were placing this in the same continuity as the previous X-Men films; after all, the sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine is apparently still alive (I’ve been wondering what they’ll call that – More Origins?) so that would make sense.

That said, James McAvoy being cast as Professor X suggests that the events of this movie will be taking place at least, say, twenty years prior to the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and let’s say thirty years before the first X-Men film (just spitballing dates) and it would seem to preclude any appearances by any of the previous X-Men cast except perhaps for Wolverine himself.

Here’s the thing, though; Emma Frost was already seen in the Wolverine movie, played by Australian Tahyna Tozzi and was, confusingly Silverfox’s sister. Frost ended up heading off with young Cyclops at the end of the film.

So…how does that reconcile with the older Pike playing Frost about twenty years previous to her appearance in Wolverine?

Easy:

I suppose the Emma Frost in Wolverine was never actually identified by name, so we can get away with it but still, this irks me – although I shouldn’t expect anything else from the way that Fox has screwed with characters in the X-Men movies.

Also, and this is just a pet peeve, Emma Frost is not fricking English – although I suppose we have Grant Morrison to thank for that. Sigh.

Marvel’s released a preview image of Dark X-Men – presumably what X-Men Legacy turns into in a few issues.

I’m not sure about all these ‘Dark’ books cropping up, mainly because I don’t think they all can sustain a long run, but this has one thing going for it:

Dagger!

And another:

Namor! (He is Marvel’s First Mutant, you know).

The rest of the team looks to me like Xavier, Exodus (unless Cloak’s really changed his look), Daken Dark Wolverine (sigh), Mimic, and two other members. That looks like Emma Frost in the black outfit, but I’m wondering if it might not be Lady Mastermind.

And that guy at the back with the big ‘Omega’ sign on his suit? My bet’s on this guy…

EDIT I have been corrected on the id of two members above. On one, my back up guess was right, and on the other I’m apparently way off base…but I’ll leave the post as it stands for now, at least…

Dark Reign Preview Thoughts

December 9, 2008 by

IGN has a preview of Dark Reign, and it doesn’t look good.

I normally like Alex Maleev’s work, but he’s clearly best suited for street-level stuff. His Namor, here, is quite simply ugly. And I don’t mean that he doesn’t look handsome, I mean that he doesn’t look anything like he’s looked in the past seventy-odd years.

Oh, and he doesn’t look handsome. Or regal.

It doesn’t help that Bendis, who I liked on the character before, writes him like a lecherous drunk in this scene, hitting on anything with a double-X chromosome. (Thanks for the catch, Jace!)

“Hello, ladies…”
There is one redeeming feature, though. I quite like Bendis’ Doom in these pages (although I still don’t see Doom going anywhere at Norman Osborn’s invitation, no matter what)…

…of course, he’s probably about to call her fat or something.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still picking up the book but I wish it looked – and read – better.

I think I’ve figured Cable out. It’s not actually about Cable, it’s about how his story and baby-sitting mission affects other people. That explains why Cable’s not in too much, at least not as you’re used to him, which explains Farmer Cable…

…and Evil Dead Cable.

It may be rubbish, but for some reason I’m still enjoying it. I really have no defense.
