A minimal week this week with only two books making the cut from the big two – one being one I’m considering dropping with a creative team change and the other being…sigh…Deadpool. I have issues. Luckily, Image turns it around…

Supergirl #57 – I’ve enjoyed this run buy Sterling Gates and Jamal Igle so much that I’m not sure I’ll stick around for the new team of Nick Spencer and Bernard Chang, in spite of thinking they’ll do a good job. I guess we’ll see.

Deadpool #28 – I have no defense for this. Sorry. Except that I enjoy it, of course, which should be defense enough.

X-Men Forever Vol 5 Once More Into The Breach TP – Ditto. Liking this run a lot. Preordered, so probably won’t get it till next week.

Morning Glories #3 – I really enjoyed #1 (which I picked up a few weeks back in its third printing), apparently missed #2 – so I think I’ll wait for the trade on this. Writer Nick Spencer appears to have come out of nowhere and be writing everything (see: Supergirl, above) right now. Good for him.

Skullkickers #2 – This is just a damn fun book. Not sure it’ll hold it’s appeal long term, but for the short run, I’m in.

Turf #3 – The much delayed but worth the wait continuation of Jonathan Ross and Tommy Lee Edwards’ Gangsters vs Vampires vs Aliens. A great, multiple-read comic that more people should pick up.

…or it should be this anyway.

Made by Daniel Kanemoto and set to the eels’ “Fresh Blood”, these are simply awesome.

Put aside four or five minutes, watch this, then count the days till the October premiere.

I had no idea that Lennie James was in the pilot – that guy just brings class to everything.

AMC also have a bunch of character images online (and there’s a gallery below).

Aside from an oddly-airbrushed Sarah Wayne Callies, they look good!

Hope everyone had a nice long holiday weekend. This week’s books are a day late…

Red Robin #14 – Still my favorite DC book, and one of the very few I’m still picking up monthly, which I guess says something.

Amazing Spider-Man #636 – Last issue was brutal. Looking forward to this.

Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #1 – I have a feeling my inner continuity nerd may sleep better not reading this as it comes out.

Darkstar and the Winter Guard #2 – If you missed last issue, you missed Gorilla Man throwing Ursa Major in a fastball special. A GORILLA THROWING A BEAR. AT AN ATLANTEAN WARLORD. Read this.

Fantastic Four Annual #32 – Hopefully better than the regular book has been lately.

Shadowland #1 – I’m interested in this but as I haven’t been following Daredevil in a while, and I’m behind on the trades, I’ll wait for the trade.

Spider-Man/Fantastic Four #1 – I enjoyed the previous mini by Gage and Alberti that centered on the X-Men and Spidey, but I may pass on this for the trade. Maybe.

X-Men #1 – Last week’s Death of Dracula was tightly written and beautifully illustrated, setting up the new Marvel Vampireverse (there’s an imprint waiting to happen) rather well, what with different clans and dueling sons of Dracula. Recommended. That said, I’m probably going to trade wait this along with my other X-books. Then again, with Deadpool Merc With A Mouth ending, I am missing my monthly Gischler fix…

Young Allies #2 – Torn on whether to continue picking this up monthly or switch to trades. I personally feel that Toro’s backstory is a little extreme for a book that could otherwise be nicely marketed to kids, especially if it leads to the revelation that his sister was sold into sex slavery as I suspect it may do. On the other hand, the Bastards of Evil is a great name, even if the idea that there are sixteen year- olds with the superpowers of their super-villain parents screws up the general Marvel 10 year sliding timescale.

Also, just for shits and giggles I may pick up Brigade #1. The original series was always the red-headed stepchild of Image’s Liefeld-driven line (and that’s saying something), but I always kind of liked it.

I know. I’m indefensible sometimes.

Alright, a few issues this week…

Action Comics #890 – I’m not 100% sold on this but I’m interested enough – and I have enough faith in Paul Cornell – to give this a try. That said, there had better be a damn good reason Lois Lane is blithely standing by while Lex Luthor orders people killed.

Teen Titans 84 – Still a car wreck. Still reading it anyway.

Wonder Woman #600 – Maybe if only to see how JMS is taking Wonder Woman off the board so he can play with her all on his own. Still bitter about Superman? Yes I am.

Deadpool Team-Up #892 – Stupid but fun. Plus Satanna.

Death Of Dracula #1 – May get this – I enjoy Victor Gischler’s stuff and I’m actually pretty interested by the upcoming vampire infestation of the MU.

Turf #2 – I meant to do a post on why you should be reading this – but you should be, just trust me. Victorian England. Vampires. Aliens. Good stuff.

The Walking Dead…

June 24, 2010 by

…seems to be coming along nicely. AICN has had a series of articles up, all loaded with some good information and pics, which I’ve attached below (click each pic below), but I don’t think I’ve communicated just how excited I am for this TV show.

Granted, it’s only got one season for now, and that season is only six episodes long, but the prospect of seeing one of my favorite comics translated to the small screen in a way which should (hopefully) do it justice is great, especially when you have Frank Darabont leading the way.

My only concern is that it might be dismissed as ‘that zombie show’ – and now I think of it, I’m not even sure that the word ‘zombie’ even appears in the comic – but as long as it’s well-marketed, that should be avoided. And as for who the walking dead really are, I can only hope that recognition plays into the series earlier than the comic.

Darabont says in one of the AICN articles that he currently plans for Rick and co to reach the prison at the end of the second season (assuming it’s renewed) – something that happens in the comic at the end of the second trade paperback collection. That’s promising to me for reasons I can’t quite put my finger on; while I don’t want the show to be a slavish adaptation of the comic – I mean, Lori’s character would get pretty damn grating very quickly – I do like the idea of sticking to the overall arc of the comic in broad strokes.

That said, I do wonder if certain elements might not suit a live-action show; Michonne’s character for example, with her ridiculous sword skills, or the General and his men. Even so I have faith that, if the show gets that far, these are hurdles Darabont is up to.

Yep, I’m looking forward to The Walking Dead. Are you?

A much bigger week than most have been recently, but once again, there are some last issues in there too.

Justice League: The Rise of Arsenal #4 – This has got a lot of heat for last issue, which I kind of enjoyed actually. I’m saving my thoughts on the thing until the end of the series – but it hasn’t ended up heading where I expected which is actually a good thing.

Supergirl #53 – Of all the Supercharacters, it’s Supergirl who’s been changed the most by the whole New Krypton storyline. I’ll be interested to see where she goes from here.

Superman #700 – Potentially my last issue, since the more I read about JMS’ upcoming run, the more I’m reminded of ‘For Tomorrow‘.

Amazing Spider-Man #635 – The Grim Hunt kicked off…well, pretty grimly, with the literal sacrifice of a relatively long-standing member of the Spider-cast. Granted, not a member who got much play at all, and a member who was pretty much forgotten for a long time, but still. I hope that her death at least is shown to affect JJJ. Promising.

Fantastic Four #580 – My dissatisfaction with the FF at the moment is reaching breaking point. I have a run back to Byrne – which means, yes, even through that godawful dream FF storyline, but this could be it for me.

Namora #1 – Maybe; I’ve picked up a few of these Women of Marvel one-shots and they’ve ranged from pretty good to pretty mediocre. I like Namora as a character a lot, but I’m sure this will end up in an Atlas tpb so it may be worth waiting for.

And you know what? I may get Sea Bear & Grizzly Shark #1 just because, goddammit, that’s what comics should be about.

Danger Girl Casting

April 15, 2010 by

Over on Formspring, I was asked who I’d cast as the three main characters in the just-announced Danger Girl movie.

Well, with the caveats that (a) it’s been a while since I read the book, (b) I doubt it’ll get made at the end of the day, and (c) I realise that one of these actresses is close-to-A list, one is TV B list on a show I like but rarely watch, and one is TV C list on a show I don’t watch, which makes them an unlikely set, I present you with:

Abbey Chase – Legend of the Seeker‘s Tabrett Bethell

Sydney Savage – Emily Blunt

Natalia Kassle – Chuck’s Yvonne Starhovski

How’s that?

The Walking Dead

March 31, 2010 by

I don’t really talk about The Walking Dead that much, or how much I love it, or how much I’m anticipating Frank Darabont’s take on the show for TV. I follow the book in trades, meaning I’m always at least six issues behind what’s on the shelves, and as a result I’m always slightly worried that someone’s going to swing by and post something like:

I don’t know, I was a fan right up to the point where the zombies started using machinery and ran Rick over with a combine.

- and then I’ll be spoiled for life, not to mention irritated beyond belief.

However it’s worth noting that this is probably the only book I buy the trade of the day it comes out, and have done since the first volume. It’s just that good.

One of the reasons why I’m looking forward to the greenlit AMC TV show is that I’m a big fan of Frank Darabont when it comes to character work amidst horrible circumstances – I mean, The Shawshank Redemption should be on everyone’s top ten movies list, and I think The Green Mile is generally underrated due to being a tad overlong. My main reason to be confident in his abilities, however, stem from The Mist, but that’s probably the subject of a whole other post.

My only reservation with The Walking Dead TV show is the casting. Rumor has it that Jonny Lee Miller is front runner for Rick, while ‘that guy from The ClassJon Bernathl has been cast as Rick’s partner Shane. While I have no opinion of Bernathl (other than him being that guy from The Class, which isn’t really a good thing), I really can’t see Miller as Rick. It’s not that I don’t like him but I think of him in lighter roles, such as Eli Stone, rather than this. He always seems a little…I don’t want to say podgy, but soft maybe. Trainspotting was a long time ago, and Miller’s along way from Sickboy these days.

I can’t help but feel that this is a missed opportunity. You know who would have made a perfect Rick?

Similarly, I can’t think of a better Shane than…well, a guy best known for playing another Shane.

I mean, sure – Holloway may be reluctant to commit to another potential multi-year show, and Goggins has probably had enough of being called Shane, but they’d be perfect for the roles; of course, I suspect that they’d also be more expensive than Miller and that guy from The Class. so that’s certainly a factor.

Who do you think would make a good Rick or Shane? Or Lori for that matter?

So, uh, Image United…

October 16, 2009 by

…is basically Extreme Sacrifice but will all of the Image characters instead of just the Extreme ones, right?

I mean, Image United has original Spawn (and who even knew there was more than one?) Al Simmons looking like King of Hell out to destroy the world…

…and Extreme Sacrifice had Chapel (who incidentally killed Al Simmons originally) looking like King of Hell out to destroy the world.

Man, at least Extreme Sacrifice came polybagged with awesome trading cards, and starred character that were, like, extreme.

Is Image United going to do that? Is it, is it?

I don’t think so.

I’m even stupider than I thought. I accidentally added this to be posted in the PM instead of the AM, which means that my last post makes little sense. Maybe now it will.

After what has been a heavy few weeks, this one is finally a little smaller.

Batman & Robin #5 – I was pretty impressed with Tan’s work last issue after my doubts; that’ll learn me.

Batman Annual
#27 – Probably not. I have little interest in the new Azrael in spite of Fabian Nicieza’s involvement.

Justice League: Cry for Justice
#4 – This has become a must-read for all the wrong reasons.

REBELS Annual: Starro the Conqueror
– Again, probably not. The title’s hanging by a thread with me and I don’t really need the origin of a villain I’m not interested in.

Superman: World of New Krypton
#8 – Kal’s in charge of the Kryptonian army and the Thanagrians are invading. Where’s Hawkman when you need him, eh? Oh, dead…

Amazing Spider-Man
#608 – ‘Who was Ben Reilly’ kicks off – and I think that mean that Kaine’s on his way back. Color me excited! That was ’90s slang for you. I’m so hip.

Astonishing X-Men
#31 – Still being published? Ellis is joined by Phil Jiminez; expect big ideas, detailed artwork and big delays.

Dark Reign The List Secret Warriors
– As I’ve said before, I’m sticking with Secret Warriors till Dark Reign’s done, but then I’m out unless there’s a major change in focus and direction.

Doctor Voodoo Avenger Of The Supernatural
#1 – Probably not picking this up, but…but…I’m interested.

X-Babies
#1 – Once again, probably won’t pick this up (even though I liked the X-Babies back in the day), but that’s a nice cover.

X-Men vs Agents Of Atlas
#1 – The title that won’t die comes back with an X-Men mini to boost interest. I’ll be there.

Proof
#24 – These stand alone issues are often better than the arcs. This one focuses on one of the fairies, which sounds bad but probably won’t be.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
#29 – Things finally seem to be picking up momentum. One that probably reads better in trades, but I’ve been saying that for a while now.

After a couple of weeks that were very heavy, we’ve finally got a light week!

Batman #690 – This has been pretty entertaining under Winick, and I’m very much on board with Dick as Batman.

Justice League: Cry for Justice #3 – This, I have to admit, is more to laugh about it than any other reason. I can only assume James Robinson is writing badly on purpose, because he’s certainly capable of doing a hell of a lot of better than this.

Magog #1 – A series I can’t imagine anyone asked for – but the creative team of Giffen and Porter is pretty damn good.

Supergirl Annual #1 – The origin of Superwoman; any chance we’ll get any word on Lucy Lane’s missing baby? Probably not.

Agents Of Atlas #10 – I was going to bow out after #8, but the news that the series is ending then continuing in the backup in Hercules’ book made me come back for the end of the run.

Essential Sub-Mariner Vol 1 - Oh yes.

Invincible Iron Man #17 – This is now dragging somewhat – but it’s still a pretty damn good book. Wish the guy who wrote this was writing X-Men instead of that other guy.

Torch #1 – Maybe…I’ve always liked Jim Hammond but I’m not sure he can really support his own series.

Buffy #28 – Nothing inspiring to say about this comic any more. It’s just there, that’s all.

Proof #23 – The finale of the Julia arc. Not really feeling the comic recently, but I’ll probably soldier on if only because of how astonishingly well researched the comic is. Go look up Julia Pastrana for the full, horrifying truth about this arc’s central character.

The Walking Dead heads to AMC

August 12, 2009 by

Variety and THR are reporting that Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead is heading to AMC under Frank Darabont, apparently as an ongoing series.

I don’t know about you, but coming from the network that has Mad Men (and I’ve heard good things about Breaking Bad), I think this is great news.

On a side note, if you only know Darabont from the excellent The Shawshank Redemption and pretty good The Green Mile, you really should check out The Mist. It was one of my favorite movies of 2007 (and I reviewed it here), and the ending especially packed a gut punch or three – I know that a lot of people complained that it deviated from the book, but honestly, I like the movie’s ending more.

Anyway – good news for Kirkman!

PROOF Optioned for TV

June 30, 2009 by

Typical – on the same day I post a review saying I’m probably going to drop Proof as it’s not connecting with me anymore, here comes news that it’s been optioned for TV!

Congrats to Alex Grecian and Riley Rossmo – I once interviewed Alex with Chris Partin, but unfortunately the interview got deleted through technical issues. Alex is a genuinely nice guy and deserves all the success he gets!

Last week was a huge week, so let’s get to it (some spoilers below) -

Detective Comics #854 – Beautiful artwork, solid story – and that’s on both Batwoman and The Question co-feature. I have to say that I like this version of Kate Kane more than the version we met in 52. Like the look, like the base, like her dad helping…good stuff all around.

Gotham City Sirens
#1 – Store I went to was out. Maybe next week.

Green Lantern #42 – A bit of a let down, partly because I find Blue Lanterns of Hope stupid, partly because I find Larfleeze a daft villain, and partly because I’m sick of all the Lanterns just assuming that the Guardians are right, or at least being unwilling to question anything. This is on the endangered list post-Blackest Night.

Justice League of America #34 – Adequate wrap-up to the Starbreaker arc – although I still don’t really get why Cowboy Batman was there and the revelation about Sun Eaters being larvae Starbreakers is pretty much nonsensical. Let’s move on, already.

Superman #689 – A so-so ‘day in the life’ issue, with Valor touring the world and having splash page adventures in every country he visits, along with a one-panel inset where he sees something beautiful. Aw. Yes, it’s as cloying as it sounds.

Amazing Spider-Man #598 – Darker than usual, with Spidey getting a fistful of torture from Bullseye while Harry flounders and Norman proves he has a prediliction for blondes around his son’s age. Also, nodbody’s surprised that this guy seems to have been forgotten by everyone. Can it be? Did OMD delete Sins Past? Because if it did, I’m all for it!

Astonishing X-Men #30 – I asked last week if anyone still cared about this title. The answer is probably not. I’m kind of pissed off that Ellis killed Forge after turning him a little more crazy, though. I always liked him. Beautiful art, though.

Avengers The Initiative #25 – Good solid wrap-up issue as we get the new status quo of the Initiative. Lots to like here – dropping Gravity into the GLA is a genius idea (mini series, please!); I like the idea of the Avengers Resistance – especially with a newly-revitalized Tigra leading it; and Gauntlet sucker punching Ares out of the window of Avengers Tower. Good stuff.

Dark Avengers #6 – So. Norman’s still insane. Sentry’s still useless as a character. Mike Deodato still draws exceptionally well. And the cover doesn’t represent a single thing that happens in the issue. Still good fun.

Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia #1 – Okay set-up issue for the crossover, but I’m becoming less and less a fan of Fraction’s work on the X-Men, and that carries over here a little. Also, I’ve never been a fan of ‘torn from the headline’ stories, and Proposition X and Proposition 8 are a little too close for me to fully embrace the story yet. Oh, and the apparent treatment of Xavier seems a little pointless given the amount of time we just spent traipsing around the world with him getting him back. And, even though I’m told otherwise, I still think the Loki thing was a screw up.

Dark Reign Lethal Legion #1 – I picked this up because Tieri promised Crusher Creel. Well, he’s in it, barely, but I’ll forgive the false advertising. The majority of the issue focuses on Tiger Shark, in prison, telling how the current Lethal Legion – him, the Grim Reaper, Creel, Mr Hyde, Nekra (who also popped up in Utopia, oddly enough), the Grey Gargoyle and a final mystery member – got together and got set up. I’m not sold on the flashback-heavy structure of the story, but it’s got potential. Oh, and the art by Mateus Santoloco is very reminiscent of Darick Robertson.

Guardians Of The Galaxy #15 – The Guardians wrap up their War of Kings involvement in typical strong fashion; Moondragon’s not the woman she used to be; Warlock might be the man he will become and used to be (look, it makes sense); Crystal’s no helpless hostage; Lockjaw might be god (at least if you’re Cosmo) and Groot is Groot. Simply awesome. What comics should be.

Incredible Hercules #130 – Slight misstep this time out as Zeus gets put on trial, simply because he’s such a pompous ass that you really don’t want him to be saved. That said, there’s some good stuff with Cho and his parents (and Aegis, of all people), and Hercules’ speech in defence of his father is great. So even when this comic’s isn’t firing on all cylinders, it’s still better than 90% of the comics out there.

Nova #26 – A great book, but I’m not a fan of the reintroduced Corps. I don’t want a second rate Green Lantern Corps, I want Rich Rider. Let’s get this back on track and I won’t even mention that Robbie Rider’s supposed to be missing a finger, okay?

Secret Warriors #5 – Best issue so far, and the first one not to feature the team. What does that tell you? That nobody cares about the team because their characters haven’t been developed at all? Probably.

Skaar Son Of Hulk #12 – Some smashing and more than a few surprises. A light, fun read – and there’s more to Skaar than meets the eye. I’ll be picking up Incredible Hulk #600 to see where Skaar and his dad land next.

Thunderbolts #133 – Okay, well…if Black Widow isn’t who we think she is, who is she? Tasha? Mystique? This just got a lot more interesting between that, her real boss, Ghost’s connivingness and Eric O’Grady potentially stepping up in a big way. On top of that there were more examples of HAMMER’s gestapo-like tactics and the welcome return of Songbird. One of Marvel’s most unpredictable titles right now.

Uncanny X-Men
#512 – So. Looks like it’s not just Greg Land’s static posing that makes Uncanny a bit of a mess right now, is it? Fraction is not on good form here. The whole X-Men science team thing seems like a good idea but plays like a second rate Planetary, to be honest.

X-Force #16 – The Messiah War concludes with not so much a bang as a whimper. A pity, because it had been pretty good fun up to hear – but at this point its difficult to see what, if any, changes to the status quo of either books this story has really made.

X-Men Forever
#2- It feels a little wrong that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. From a page-long soliloquy from Nick Fury to hearing a sound in a corridor, to Wolverine apparently having adamantium hair, there’s so much wrong here that it’s difficult defend. And yet…and yet…it’s still strangely great.

Proof #21 – As much as I like the concept of this book, I think I’m about done. It’s well done, but over the last few arcs it feels like its lost its way – and that’s a damn shame because for a while there it was one of my most anticipated books. I’m out after the conclusion of this arc.

It looks like this is going to be a small week despite all of those Marvel books I would like to check out, but I’m holding back:

Amazing Spider-Man #598 – So. This was the plan for Harry’s return? Interesting.

Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia #1 – Call me curious. I’ve heard good things about this crossover so I’m going to check it out. Plus, it’s Matt Fraction. How could you go wrong?

Dynamo 5 #22 – I’m so behind on this series. I need to get back to reading it. The comics are sitting here; I just keep pushing them off to the side. I’m so mean.

G.I. Joe #6 – This series continues to be my guilty pleasure because it just makes me happy to be reading comics. Plus, that Robert Atkins is a really good artist!

Gotham Sirens #1 – While I’m not super excited about this book, I’m curious.

Fusion #2 – I liked the first issue of this Top Cow/Marvel crossover. It doesn’t hurt that Abnet and Lanning are writing it.

Ms. Marvel #40 –
This is just one of those Marvel books that are so good and very few people are talking about it. We’re just over the three year mark and it’s just getting better. Brian Reed is awesome!

Predator #1 – I’m a fan of the Predator movies (yes, even the second one) and I’ve enjoyed a number of the comic books that have come out. I really enjoyed the new ALIENS series that’s out by Dark Horse and I’m hoping this is more of the same. It’s written by John Arcudi and drawn by Javier Saltares. What could go wrong?

Proof #21 – This book is Rich and Chris Approved! Go buy it!

Red Sonja #45 – Here’s another one of those Brian Reed series that has a great female lead that doesn’t take crap from anyone. Good stuff.

Underground #1

June 22, 2009 by

Last week I mentioned the Whiteout movie – well, a week after that gets released, the comic’s artist, Steve Lieber, has a new book out from Image in conjunction with Agents of AtlasJeff Parker : Underground #1

I’m not a detailed reviewer by any means, so let me just say: this is a great comic, and one issue in you can see that there’s a great story here – not to mention movie potential.

The unlikely-named Wesley Fischer is a Park Ranger in Marion, Kentucky trying to prevent the local Stillwater Cave being turned into a tourist trap. Developers and locals alike think it’ll bring income into town, so she and her partner – with whom she has a newly-complicated relationship – look to be the only ones who are interested when the developers start blasting the caves early.
Things quickly escalate, and by the end of the first issue, you can see that things in Marion – and more specifically the Stillwater Caves – are going to get very hairy for Wesley and her partner very quickly.

Parker’s dialogue is spot on as always, and Lieber’s crisp artwork manages to deliver not only on the every day scenes, but also in the claustrophobia of the underground caves.

It’s not out for a few months, but Underground is definitely worth your attention. You can check out Lieber & Parker online here:

There’s a lot coming out this week thanks to Marvel flooding the market again. They really need to sort the scheduling out…

Detective Comics #854 – The new creative team of Rucka and Williams take on Batwoman as the lead feature – the first time it hasn’t been Batman in…well, a long time. Easily over 800 issues. I’m still not sold on Batwoman if only because we haven’t really learned much about her in the past few years, but it’s a solid team so…

Gotham City Sirens
#1 – Catwoman, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy? A lot of people seem to have issues with Guillem March’s art being too cheesecake-y. I’m not one of them; I think it has just the right amount of cheesecake.

Green Lantern
#42 – Handless Hal? However will he wear a ring now?

Justice League of America
#34 – Len Wein continues his transitionary arc, which is a pretty thankless job.

Superman
#689 – Valor’s arc is by far the most interesting in this World Without Superman thing, and his upcoming fate has really shown that. A pity then that Guardian is pretty lifeless and Steel is underused.

Amazing Spider-Man
#598 – American Son continues, with Spidey stuck in Avengers tower and, apparently, shot by the ever-present Norman Osborn. Which can’t be good.

Astonishing X-Men
#30 – Really? Does anyone even care anymore?

Avengers The Initiative
#25 – The new status quo arrives, with Hood’s army of villains joining the Initiative. Should be interesting.

Dark Avengers
#6 – This has been consistently fun, if a little light on revealing too much of the characters. Last issue corrected that somewhat, with the new Captain Marvel finding out that his heroic counterparts are actually a bunch of villains. Be interested to see where this goes now.

Dark Avengers Uncanny X-Men Utopia
#1 – Hyped as the next big event, I can only hope that Fraction has a better time with it than he did with the last Uncanny arc.

Dark Reign Lethal Legion
#1 – I don’t want to get this, but Absorbing Man is on the team, which makes it if not an automatic purchase, at least something I’ll consider. And you can’t go wrong with Tieri taking on villains.

Dark Reign Sinister Spider-Man
#1 – Dammit. I will avoid $3.99 mini series. I will!

Dark Wolverine
#75 – Probably not picking it up, but the preview looked surprisingly good.

Guardians Of The Galaxy
#15 – Every issue, I say it’s one of my top pics. And it still is.

Incredible Hercules
#130 – This is probably one of the better Marvel weeks, quality wise – because any week that has GoG, Herc and Nova is a good one. Even if it’s an expensive one…

New Avengers
#54 – The finale of the magic arc has been somewhat spoiled by news of that new series last week. Ah well. Here’s hoping Bendis doesn’t overplay Voodoo’s patois as he never spoke that way before and it’s bordering on the offensive.

Nova
#26 – I’ve mentioned that this is awesome, right? Good.

Secret Warriors
#5 – Yawn-worthy and dull; I can only hope that the wrap-up to this arc is a godo jumping off point. Regardless, once it’s done so am I.

Skaar Son Of Hulk
#12 – Planet Skaar continues as father meets son. I predict smashing!

Thunderbolts
#133 – Songbird’s back! One of the characters that’s grown most in the past ten or so years, I felt she was kind of emasculated during Ellis’ run on the book, so I’m glad to see Diggle’s got her kicking ass again.

Uncanny X-Men
#512 – Didn’t I get disappointed by the last issue just two weeks ago?

X-Force
#16 – Messiah War concludes. It’s basically been one long fight scene, but pretty fun anyway.

X-Men Forever
#2- Okay, I did enjoy this but I get the distinct feeling that this is a trade-book for me. The $3.99 cover price certainly helped in that decision. Still, fun, nostalgic stuff.

Proof #21 – The Julia arc continues. Highly recommended.

Well, another week and another crap load of comics that I want to read and will be excited if I ever get through them all! If you’re following me over at Twitter (and shame on you if you’re not) I posted a series of posts and replies to my need to cut back on reading Marvel and DC comics in order to spend more time on all the other books out there that I’d like to try out. While I still enjoy Marvel and DC, I need a break from them and explore what else is out there. So, my hope is that this list will be much smaller, but you never know until you start looking. So, let’s get to it:

Amber Atoms #4 - I’ve got this one on my list, but I’m behind on my reading. I’ve got the issues, but #1 is the only one I’ve read. It was a good issue which is why I keep buying it. I’ll get to reading them soon.

Body Bags Vol 1 Fathers Day TP - I’m a big fan of Jason Pearson, and BODY BAGS has always been a good read. I pick up every one-shot and miniseries that comes out, but I’ve got to support Pearson and buy the trade.

Bomb Queen Presents All Girl Comics One Shot - Call this one a guilty pleasure. This series of miniseries are SO wrong, but funny. Kristen Simon is writing this one, but I’ve got all the faith in the world that she’ll bring it!

Boys Herogasm #2 - I read the first issue of this book and really didn’t know what to think of it. Its REALLY over the top, even for Ennis.

Captain America #600 - I’m buying it because I’m a huge fan of this series and the creators involved. I can’t say if I like what’s happening with the word that Steve’s coming back, but I’ll hold ‘judgement’ until I read it all. Brubaker hasn’t steered us wrong yet with this book. I trust that it will be entertaining.

Executive Assistant Iris #1 – Say what you will about the name of this Aspen book, the zero issue was good! I’m really looking forward to this new series.

G.I. Joe: Cobra #4 - This issue concludes the current story and miniseries. Chuckles has my vote for character of the year!

Invincible #63 - I’m trying to find that point where I stop reading the monthly issues and switch to trades, but I can’t. Each issue is SO good!

Invincible Iron Man #14 - I hate I love this book so much! Fraction has made me love reading Iron Man again. Thank you!

Man With No Name The Good The Bad And The Uglier #11 - I enjoy this book, but its not a stand out book. Its good, but almost worth waiting until its collected to read.

Masquerade #4 - I’ve finally gotten all my PROJECT SUPERPOWER comics out and ready to read. Funny. I’ve only read the first two or three issues of the initial series and I’m buying up all these spin-offs. Yes. I have a problem!

Power Girl #2 - I’m a fan of Amanda Conner. Anything she draws I pick up. No question. I even bought a copy of MAD Magazine because she did a story in it. I’m devoted. Ha!
Project Superpowers Chapter 2 #0 – Its a freakin’ dollar, folks! Check it out!

Well, this is still a long list of books. Ugh. One of these days I’ll cut it back. I promise!
For those of you heading out to Heroes Con this weekend, I’ll be there on Friday. Drop me a line at chris@thecomicaddiction.com or www.twitter.com/chrispartin and let me know if you’ll be around!

Later!

Hey, everyone! Its been a while since I’ve posted my pull list. I didn’t want all of you to think I had given up. Rich’s been so great to let me post here from time to time, but when you’re running your own review site, producing seven episodes of our podcasts a month, not to mention family and school stuff – I get busy. LOL. But we’r ehere to talk comics! What am I grabbing this week? Let’s see…

Absolution #0 – I don’t normally pick up Avatar titles mainly because I just don’t have any connection to the creative teams. This series is being written by Christos Gage and I’m a fan of his. I’ll check out this issue and see if it grabs me. If not, this may be the only issue I get.

Action Comics #878 – I’m having a lot of fun with this book. Its strange to be reading this book without Superman, but the further we get from the Superman issues the more this series feels like its suppose to be.

Amazing Spider-Man #597 – The “American Son” arc has been pretty good. I’m always a sucker for a Harry Osborn story. I’m really interested to see what happens to Peter when the Dark Avengers discover him – because you know they will!

Batman #687 – I am so excited to get back to Batman. Last week’s BATMAN AND ROBIN #1 was fun, but I want to see what Winick is going to do with this series. I really enjoyed his first run on the series, but can lightning strike twice?

Booster Gold #21 – I haven’t been picking up this series for a while. The only thing I want to point out is the Blue Beetle back up in this issue. Not sure if that’s enough for me to pick it up.

Buck Rogers #1 – Dynamite Entertainment has been grabbing up so many properties this last year or so. BUCK ROGERS seems to be an odd choice, but after the zero issue I’m on board. This is definitely not the hokie book I thought it was going to be. Straight up sci-fi action!

GI Joe Origins #4 – Every month IDW puts out three great G.I. JOE titles that are so different from one another. I’m curious to see how they all come together in the next month or so.

Green Lantern Corps #37 – Come on – its a riot on Oa! What more do you want in a GL book?

Proof #20 – I’m behind on my reading with this book only because I love reading several issues at a time. I like that ‘trade’ feel without waiting for the trade.

Red Robin #1 – So… who is Red Robin? I think we all have a good idea who it is, but I’ll play along as I pick up this issue.

Savage Dragon #149 – One more issue before #150 and this book continues to pick up steam. This is probably my favorite book I’m reading right now.

Sherlock Holmes #2 – Here’s another one of those properties that Dynamite picked up that I just wasn’t sure what would become of them. The first issue was so good! I’m standing in line for this one, folks!

Soulfire New World Order #2 – SOULFIRE is one of those titles that I just got hooked into from the very first issue I read. The recent miniseries that Aspen have been releasing have been pretty good stories with amazing art and well worth while of checking out.

Unknown #2 – Remember that week where there were three “un” titles? Well, we’re back for Round 2 and the first is UNKNOWN from Boom! Studios. I really liked this first issue so I knew I had to check out the second. The story is a detective mystery with a bit of the science fiction/mystical/fantasy. Its a good mix.

Unthinkable #2 – This is Boom’s other “un” book and is probably the one based in reality the most. Last issue we got to see our lead character be a part of a government think tank which eventually closed shop. Now some of those scenarios they thought up are happening. What to do? What to do?

War Of Kings Savage World Of Skaar – I’m reading WAR OF KINGS, but is this necessary? Just curious.

X-Men Forever #1 – If you’ve been over to my site (www.thecomicaddiction.com) then you know we’ve been on a kick with this series. We had a podcast interview with Chris Claremont. Marvel gave us an advance look at this particular issue (which I REALLY enjoyed). We started up a Annotations and Insights series to help people figure out what’s happening in the series. I was skeptical of this series at first, but I’m on board now. Good fun comics.

Wow! Another HUGE week for me. I’m not sure I’ll grab them all, but you never know until you’re standing in the comic shop staring at all those new books… very tempting!
