This weekend Marvel teased a Fantastic Three project

It ain’t the first time…

…the book bore this banner following Reed Richards’ ‘death’ in #381 of the original series – until Ant-Man Scott Lang showed up to provide the brains a few issues later.

In fact for a family team book, the FF have had quite the cast of members – Sue took time off during both pregnancies, replaced the first time by Crystal while the second time she stayed around the background. She was also replaced by Medusa during a separation from Reed.

Years later when both she and Reed left the team to try and have a normal life (they ended up joining the Avengers briefly before returning to the FF so you can see who well that turned out) they were replaced by Crystal and Sharon Ventura, then Ms Marvel and later the She-Thing. Recently the couple took a leave of absence once again to repair their marriage following the superhero Civil War, and were replaced by the Black Panther and Storm.

The Thing has been out of the team at various points too, whether he be depowered (although at times he stuck around in a Thing robotic suit), on the Secret Wars Battleworld or simply in a huff. He’s been replaced by Luke Cage and the She-Hulk.

There have also been a lot of almost-members, hanger-ons who have stuck around for a while but never been officially on the team – Nova (Frankie Raye, not Rich Rider), Namorita, Nathaniel Richards and Kristoff spring to mind – so in fact the only person who hasn’t taken an extended leave of absence at one time or another is the Human Torch.

So – can we expect a Torch-less FF soon?

Metabunker picked up on the wholesale slaughter of Skrulls by the Avengers in the latest issue of Secret Invasion (thanks Blog@) noting that there used to be a time when most heroes didn’t kill, no matter who they were fighting.
Clint Barton no longer goes by that code, obviously. Geez, you bring back a guy’s dead wife for five minutes and he gets all uppity…

I suppose that this is going to be justified by some ‘this is a time of war’ rhetoric and will be quickly forgotten by most involved.
I’m relatively sure that the Avengers’ execution of the Supreme Intelligence in Operation Galactic Storm was swept under the rug. Interesting that Clint Barton – then Goliath was against that killing…

At least the Black Knight’s consistent. He delivered the killing stroke in Galactic Storm and he’s quite happy to lop Skrull’s heads off in the excellent Captain Britain and MI:13. That’s what fighting in the Crusades will do for you, I guess.

In fact, aside from one follow up issue of Captain America where Cap tried to tell everyone how disappointed he was in them, and his subsequent quitting of the Avengers in a huff for a time, I don’t even remember the execution being much of an issue ever again.

What irks me more about the situation is that Marvel has gone out of its way to show that if a Skrull truly believes themselves to be the person they’re impersonating, as some of the Savage Land Skrulls did, then they’re actually capable of being that person.
That’s the whole principle behind the returned Captain Marvel.
In that case, the wholesale slaughter of these Skrulls is tantamount to killing the heroes themselves. If you are what you make of yourself and believe yourself to be, can’t you aspire to be that thing?
Apparently not if you’re a Skrull.
I can understand some characters gleefully offing everyone in sight – Black Widow, for example – but when it comes to Clint, Spidey, Luke Cage…it just feels wrong.
I guess at least Luke Cage didn’t kill Jewel…although from future solicits I suspect that that Jessica Jones may not be the only Skrull.
Also annoying is that all the heroes from the ship that crashed in the Savage Land turned out to be Skrulls. Having at least a couple – obviously not ones with starring roles in current comics – turn out to be the real deal would have been a great idea. Instead, they seem to have been a convenient plot device to keep the Avengers from New York. I can’t help but think a platoon full of Super Skrulls could have done the same thing in a far more permanent fashion.
It was just one giant plot device – and that’s not great writing.
I had such high hopes for this crossover as well…

Sweet Christmas!

May 19, 2008 by

Tyrese Gibson says that he’s still considering playing Luke Cage in John Singleton’s still-in-development movie (that hasn’t been on any recent Marvel press releases, now I think about it).

It’s not a bad fit and if it keeps him away from BA Baracus…hey, you think we could we get him to punk out Julian McMahon in the movie?

Please?

The Bad

1) Tom Foster is a self-entitled whiny brat that I have no interest in reading about. I always liked Bill Foster and wish he had survived long enough to give his troublesome nephew a clip round the ear and a stern talking to.

2) Misty Knight transforms from a hard ass into a self-doubting fool. I was never that keen on her but that’s just plain annoying.

3) No Colleen Wing.

4) Amadeus Cho is crossing the line from amusing to obnoxious.

5) With the Damage Control mini coming out in January, it would appear that the rebuilding of New York will last till next May. Which is odd because it looks fine over in Spider-Man right now.

6) No Colleen Wing.

7) Manhattan starting to split apart. Just stupid.

8) I don’t believe Colleen Wing was in it.

9) Luke Cage acts like an ass in response to someone who says that they didn’t want to fight. How does Cage respond? By hitting him and saying that they did.

The Good

1) The Warbound in general and everyone else turning a blind eye to them escaping.

2) The preview for the Incredible Hercules wherein the bearded demi-god attacks a SHIELD helicarrier with a barrel of merlot.

3) Hercules holding Manhattan together with chains reminded me of another stupid Marvel Hercules feat, where he towed the island of Manhattan. Yes, read that sentence again and boggle your mind at the sheer stupidity of it. I wish I had a scan of that, but I’ll settle for the book’s cover…
