Goddammit, Marvel!

March 12, 2010 by

It seems to me that Marvel are screwing with me.

I’ve dropped X-Men in favor of trades, something that would have been unthinkable to me a few years ago and, with the end of Siege and the dawning of the Heroic Age, I was going to jump ship on all the Avengers books too – again, in favor of trades.

While I’m still planning to do this, Marvel seem intent on luring me back to the comic store week to week. It started with Ben Grimm.

The Thing – probably my second favorite Marvel character (or at least Marvel superhero) is on the Avengers, a team that has always been one of my favorites. I enjoyed his (very) brief stint on the West Coast Avengers (yet another firm favorite) back in the early days of that team, loved Marvel Two-In-One and his solo series – so having him on this team is one hell of a way to make me want to carry on picking up the New Avengers.

But no, that wasn’t enough.

They also announced Young Allies by Sean McKeever. Normally this wouldn’t be a huge deal for me, but two of the members are former member of the New Warriors Firestar (favorite team book ever, just in case you missed that) and Gravity (McKeever’s Gravity mini-series made me a fan of the character for life).

Anything else?

Oh yes, the bastards.

Jim McCann has a Hawkeye & Mockingbird ongoing coming March. So that would be my third favorite Marvel hero and his wife.

Goddammit.

What else have you got up your sleeve, Marvel?

A New Warriors relaunch?

The return of Marvel Team-Up?

A back-in-continuity Power Pack?

An ongoing Cloak & Dagger?

What, Marvel, what?

…I’ve started buying a few Marvel toys. I don’t have any where to put them, but I’m concentrating on specific teams and characters, so it’s not too much of a problem. Honest.

Still, you know what would be a problem? If they made (in any format) certain characters that I know – know – they never will.

Thunderstrike, Mockingbird, US Agent, Justice, Firestar, Quasar, Starfox, Jack of Hearts, Black Goliath…you know, like these guys:

There are some figures I’d love, though – a Masters of Evil set (with Thunderbolts variants), a New Warriors set, a Clint Barton Goliath…

Lucky for me that (a) they’ll never happen, and (b) I don’t have the inclination to start customing!

Just read a preview for next week’s New Avengers #50 which got nicely into the heads of some of the current team roster – but the bit I really liked was this:

Seems like Bendis has finally gotten ahold of Clint Barton’s smart-ass self rather than the kind of introspective whiner he’s been since he came back.

Did I say it was nice to have HawkeyeRonin and Mockingbird back together again?

Because it is!

Mockingbird’s back. Literally.

December 10, 2008 by

That’s…that’s some outfit. I guess Mock got taken after she ditched the long pants, eh?

I am looking forward to this (and someone I know convinced me that it the whole hell/Legion of the Unliving stuff can be explained away) – but that’s some outfit.

Sidebar: I don’t so much mind if Clint keeps getting called Ronin, but could we lose the ugly costume sometime soon?

Please?

Second sidebar: I’m quietly hoping that Mock got replaced towards the end of the AWC series, and not before she showed back up in the book in Byrne’s run.

Okay, so just to be clear…

December 5, 2008 by

not Mockingbird sacrificing herself to save her husband and teammates?

not Mockingbird dying to save Clint, and not turning into a Skrull?

not Mockingbird turning up with her fellow dead Avengers as the Legion of the Unliving?

…and, finally, a wasted trip to Hell (well aside from springing Patsy Walker)?

Well that makes no sense at all!
That, that…

…well, okay then…

Sigh. I’m such a softy.

But I really wanted Clint to answer ‘Donna Karan’.

I wonder – could Clint reclaim ‘Hawkeye’ and Echo reclaim the ‘Ronin’ identity?

Please?
