Not to mention that when he cries because he’s sick it breaks my heart.
Anyway, in lieu of a real post let me just point you in the direction of Amazon, which currently has the JMS Thor Omnibus up for preorder at $26.39 – full retail is $64.99 so that’s a hell of a discount!
Here’s the solicit:
THOR BY J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI OMNIBUS HC COIPEL COVER
Written by J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI
Penciled by OLIVIER COIPEL, MARKO DJURDJEVIC & DAVID AJA
Covers by OLIVIER COIPEL & MICHAEL TURNER
Witness the return of Thor in a story only J. Michael Straczynski could tell! Returned to the pantheon of great Marvel heroes, the Asgardian God of Thunder is reunited with the mortal form of Dr. Don Blake. Together, they must reckon with the legacy of the mythic Norse kingdom and the awakening of its immortal heroes – but in a world that may not want them back! J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5 creator, Changeling screenwriter) hits a grand slam with his reappraisal of the Thor mythos, a creative success on so many levels the glowing praise from fans and critics alike is becoming routine. Collecting FANTASTIC FOUR #536-537, THOR #1-12 & #600-603 and THOR GIANT-SIZE FINALE.
The description on Amazon is out of date and misses off a bunch of the issues, but the ISBN number matches so it seems to be the right book – at that kind of discount its difficult to refuse!

Continue Reading »According to THR and, oh, everywhere, the future Captain America is amongst these actors; and since they are all apparently on a 30 day holding contract pending casting, it sounds pretty real:
Mike Vogel
Age: 30
Height: 5′ 10″
Pros: Pretty, in Cloverfield, in She’s Out of My League which looks pretty funny, turned down role of Angel in X-Men 3.
Cons: Pretty, in Cloverfield, short (well, same as me).
Michael Cassidy
Age: 26
Height” 6′
Pros: Was in Smallville and The O.C.. Tall.
Cons: Was crap in Smallville and The O.C.. Not blonde. A bit young.
Patrick Flueger
Age: 26
Height: 6′
Pros:Virtual unknown with no baggage in spite of being in The 4400, blonde, right height range.
Cons: Virtual unknown, a bit young, looks like a smug arse in this picture.
Scott Porter
Age: 30
Height: 6′
Pros: Awesome in Friday Night Lights (which is also awesome), was front runner for Superman in that botched JLA movie, looks the part, can sing and dance a bit.
Cons: Was front runner for Superman in that botched JLA movie.
Wilson Bethel
Age: 26
Height: 6′.
Pros: Virtual unknown, was in Generation Kill which is apparently pretty good, right height range.
Cons: Virtual unknown, bit skinny, scary eyebrows.
Chace Crawford
Age: 24
Height: 6′
Pros: Pretty, is in Gossip Girl, which isn’t exactly a pro, but worked for Blake Lively on the superhero front and was all I could think of.
Cons: Pretty, too young, is in Gossip Girl, is Chace Crawford.
John Krasinski
Age: 30
Height: 6’3″
Pros: Plenty tall, could bulk up, can act, has fanbase.
Cons: Has huge amounts of preconceptions and baggage, may be too comedic a draw, will break internet in half and lead to even more ‘Steve Carrell as Red Skull, Rainn Wilson as Baron Von Strucker’ jokes than we’ve had in the past day.
Apparently in the running but with scheduling conflicts:
Garrett Hedlund
Age: 25
Height: 6′ 1.5″
Pros: Plenty tall, virtual unknown with no baggage, is in Tron Legacy.
Cons: Looks a bit weedy, virtual unknown, bad hair.
Jensen Ackles
Age: 31
Height:6’1″
Pros: Pretty, right height, can act, was in Smallville and, of course, is Dean Goddamn Winchester and really that should be enough.
Cons: If by ‘scheduling’ issues they mean, ‘is shooting Supernatural season six’ then that’s a pretty big problem. Otherwise, not a one.
Of the listed contenders, I know who I’d prefer (Ackles or, failing that, Porter) but is this a real list, or is it just a smokescreen to cover for someone inexplicably not on the latest list, but was mentioned earlier:
Ryan McPartlin
Age: 34
Height: 6’3″
Pros: Is Awesome in Chuck, literally.
Cons: May be too Awesome.
She’d pop a cap in your ass, that’s what!

Yesterday, Twitter Pal MadMarvelGirl noted:
Jean Grey would not put up with this Osborn bullshit
and then
I have a ‘Jean Grey would not put up with this bullshit’ theory of the current Marvel Universe.
Noted SarahKuhn:
I think that needs to be on a t-shirt.
Asked and answered:
Buy it here, in censored (ladies only) and non-censored (ladies and gents) versions!
…just to give you an idea of what I’m up against. I’m actually currently reading the first two, and the rest are in no particular order – they’re just sitting in the apartment waiting to be read.
I’m not buying any more books or trades until I get at least half of these out of the way!

Sometimes you just need some Pinky and the Brain in your life…
Continue Reading »Finally, a decent(ish) sized week – and strangely enough, it’s DC that’s making up the bulk of the purchases.
Batman #688 – The first issue was better than expected, and with Bagley on board for an arc this is still a must-pick-up.
Booster Gold #22 – Been on an upswing the past issue or two. I’m sticking till it beats out the first series number of issues, at least.
Green Arrow/ Black Canary #22 – Hate to admit it but after playing catch up on this in the cheap bins, I’m kind of enjoying it right now. I’m on till the end of Kreisberg’s ‘Enemy List’ arc.
Green Lantern #43 – Of course. Blackest Night kicks off.
REBELS #6 – Good but something’s missing. Assuming this wraps up the first arc, it might be my last issue for now.
Red Robin #2 – Tim Drake remains one of my favorite DC characters, so yes, I’m there.
Superman: World of New Krypton #5 (of 12)- Surprisingly good. I’ve enjoyed this far more than I thought I would.
Wednesday Comics #1 (of 12)- Maybe. I’m not sold on the format, I’m not sold on the price – but I’ll take a look.
Amazing Spider-Man By J Michael Straczynski Ultimate Collection Book 1 TP – I won’t be picking up myself, but you could do worse. JMS turned Spidey on his head by introducing some mystic mumbo-jumbo to his origin, making him a teacher, and having Aunt May find out his identity. Only one of these was a good idea for money, but a good run of issues nonetheless.
Amazing Spider-Man Annual #36 – There’s a preview here – I’m kind of hoping that this signals the return of Kaine…is that wrong?
Dark X-Men The Beginning #1 – A collection of shorts about the Dark X-Men – I’m on board if only for Namor, Dark Beast and Cloak and Dagger.
New Warriors Classic Vol 1 TP – Seriously, buy it! I have these original issues back in the UK, but I’m still probably buying this anyway. The love I have for this book is beyond measure! Collects #1-6 and the team’s debut in Thor #411-412. Awesomeness in comic book form.
War Of Kings Warriors #1 – These Gladiator & Blastaar stories are already up on Marvel DCU but if you don’t subscribe to that, they’re worth a look.
X-Men Forever #3 – Oh, I know. It kills me that this is the X-book I’m enjoying most right now.
X-Men Legacy #226 – I’m giving it a chance but only because I trust Carey. I mean, Danger? Really…
X-Men The Shattering TP – An odd choice for a release at this point, leading up to the discovery that Wolverine was a Skrull for a while. You’d have thought this could have been released last year as a pre-Secret Invasion story. Not a great era for the team, but solid art from the likes of Alan Davis, Roger Cruz, Tom Raney and Adam Kubert.

They’re 80s TV sci-fi cheese at it’s best.
The permanently confused-looking ‘smell the fart’ acting of Marc Singer!
Jane ‘she’s bad but looks nice even though she acts mean and I’m confused’ Badler!
Faye ‘she’s lovely’ Grant!
Lizard puppet baby!
And, more importantly, Michael Goddamn Ironside!
The remake clearly has much to live up to…
…because V is chock full of awesome!

And I don’t care how entertaining the trailer is, either.
You know who is (well, was) Sherlock Holmes?
Jeremy Brett.
Although I do still have a soft spot for this…
Continue Reading »Okay, there’ll be a real post later but for now, today only you can get the Firefly series on Blu Ray for $39.99 over at Amazon.
I shouldn’t have to tell you how awesome the show is but I will: very awesome.
And thanks to a couple of codes you can also pick up the Ghostbusters Blu Ray for $9.99 – pre-order at $19.99 below:
- then at checkout use these codes: SONYPIC5 and GHOSTBLU – each give you $5 off.
The SONYPIC5 code can apparently be used for a bunch of other Sony Blu Rays, such as Dr Strangelove.
So there you go!

It was pretty good. I think this ‘Alan Moore’ guy might have a future.
But I still prefer Morrison’s Animal Man – can we get a HC of that please? Maybe some kind of omnibus?
Continue Reading »It feels like most of last week’s blogging was taken up with TV and not comics (and I didn’t even write about the Dollhouse finale or renewal!) – so maybe I should get back to comics. After all, it’s the title of the blog, right?
Marvel’s output makes for a pretty big week, but it’s the first book I’m getting from DC that I’m most looking forward to.
Batman Battle for the Cowl #3 – This has been fun in a summer blockbuster-way. Not deep, but explosive and chock full of characters. Good stuff.
Even though Fringe is over for the season, the high probability that it was going to get a renewal (which it did) meant that it was able to leave some questions unanswered.
Just for the record, here’s what I want to see – and not see – next year:
- Peter’s shady past revealed; a big deal was made about Peter not being able to come back to Boston because people were after him. He was followed a bit, he met up with an ex, beat up her current boyfriend (who was beating her), threats were made…and then that was it. Hello?
- Walter’s role in the experiments on little Olive; sure, Olivia had a bust up with Walter over his role in the cortexiphan treatments, but she still hasn’t seen the video, right?
- Olivia’s niece; the inclusion of Olivia’s sister and niece seemed to be designed to have Olivia get jealous over Peter and her sister – but I do think that there were hints that Olivia’s niece had some kind of power or ability. That, I think, is worth following up on.
- Olivia’s powers; I’d like a little more clarification on these please. She can turn off lights with her mind. She can see alternate worlds. She has really shiny hair. Oh, Olivia, is there anything you can’t do?
- ZTF; who exactly wrote it, William or Walter? My money is on Walter…
- The lab accident; …and I think William set him up to appropriate it for himself. In fact, I think William framed Walter specifically so he could use the ZTF manifesto – without that pesky ethics chapter.
- Astrid; poor old Astrid. We don’t know anything about her and she doesn’t really get too much to do except look puzzled, solve cryptography stuff and hang out with Gene. How about giving Jasika Nicole something to do?
- Gene; more, please. Much more. He’s Gene the cow. How can you not want more cow? *GASP* Cow…Bell!
- Olivia’s stepfather; Olivia’s abusive stepfather is still out there plotting his revenge. At NYCC, we were told that they would come back to that before season’s end. Maybe next season?
- Olivia and Peter; I get that a lot of people like sexual tension in their TV shows, but couldn’t we have the leads just being friends? I mean, really good friends, without the tension? That’s a hell of a lot more interesting, especially if they end up dating people who don’t quite ‘get’ their friendship. Getting romantic is just predictable and annoying.
- David Robert Jones; can the one that died be an alternate version of him trying to get home? Or can we at least get a Jones from a different world back? Because prior to last night, he was a great villain.
- Crazy-ass monsters; more, please.
- Broyles; the relationship between Broyles and Nina Sharp is an odd one. At first they seemed to know each other pretty well and be part of some kind of conspiracy. Now, not so much; in fact he’s very supportive of Olivia – but I still wonder if he has a hidden agenda. Clarification, please.
- William Bell; ah, William Bell. Founder of a cult like following (apparently). Founder of Massive Dynamic, that makes Microsoft and Apple look like start-ups. How did Olivia not recognise him? Just how long has William Bell really been sliding between parallel worlds again?
- And speaking of sliding as the show seems on the verge of becoming Sliders; please have Cryin’ Man Brown show up. Please, please, please. Please.
Today only in Amazon’s goldbox, the complete series of Angel is just $57 for all five seasons!
Consider this a PSA.
In my idiocy, I forget to mention a couple of other books that I follow in trades – namely…
Scalped – You know, for some reason I wasn’t sure about this when I first bought it. But damn, is it a good read. Dashiell Bad Horse returns to the Prairie Road Indian Reservation he grew up on after 15 years with a pair of nunchuks, an attitude and, oh yeah, an undercover FBI assignment to prove Chief Red Cloud guilty of murder. Red Cloud may – or may not – have killed two FBI agents back in the 70s, alongside Bad Horse’s mother, and a driven FBI agent is determined to get him one way or another. And then things start to get complicated.
I understand why Jason Aaron gets hired on the basis of this – it’s an amazing book, and the weird thing is that as the lead character fades into the background and spotlights are shone on the supporting ones, it only gets better. The fact that so much happens in one issue that is explained by flashbacks a few issues down the line makes it a stronger read in trades, for my money, but it’s definitely worth a look.
Jonah Hex – What can be said that hasn’t been said about this book? Amazing artists, old west sensibilities with a modern edge, strong writing and mainly done-in-ones – Jonah Hex is a great, great comic.
Yes, the book can be gruesomely over the top at times (issue #26 for example) and it can also be misogynistic – try and find a strong woman in these pages who isn’t either a prositute, raped or a former victim of some kind – but it’s true to the spirit of western books of the past and never fails to entertain.
And there’s that movie coming out…
