The Losers written by Andy Diggle with art by Jock, is as close to an action movie as you can get in comic form.
Jock’s art explodes off the page, giving the action sequences a sense of motion and vitality you don’t often get in comics, while Diggle’s script is tight and sharp, making each character distinct in the midst of chaos.
Originally published in 2003, the comic follows a group of disenfranchised covert ops as they try to get their lives back following a betrayal by the mysterious Max – unfortunately Max is a high level military/CIA asset and crossing him means putting themselves in the crosshairs. While the basic set-up may sound similar to the The A-Team that’s as far as the similarity goes; this isn’t played for laughs – it’s serious business.
Of course, things don’t go that easy as the team face mercenaries, the CIA, the fact that Max may not even exist, and a betrayal at the hands of one of their own – but then if things were easy, they wouldn’t be Losers, would they?
The complete series of The Losers is being re-released in two volumes to capitalize on the forthcoming movie starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans – so this is a perfect opportunity to get a jump on it.
Highly recommended!
The Losers Vol 1 & 2 is available on Amazon.
The Losers Vol 3-5 is available for preorder.
In what can only be viewed as an incredibly stupid move on the part of Warner Bros, the release date for The Losers has been moved from April 9th to June 4th – just one week before the release of The A-Team.
There’s a similarity in the two movies in that they’re both action-oriented and both involve former military-type operatives who are now wanted by the authorities. As such, you’d think that they’d draw the same audiences.
Cast-wise, The A-Team probably (but not definitely) comes out ahead, as Liam Neeson and hot-from-The Hangover Bradley Cooper probably score better with your average movie-goer than that-dead-guy-from-Supernatural-and-Grey’s Anatomy-who-was-in-that-weird-superhero-movie-and-was-shacked-up-with-that-milf-lady and hey-that’s-that-woman-from-the-new-Star Trek-who-was-the-cat-lady-in-Avatar.
But the one thing that The A-Team does have as a big advantage over The Losers is brand recognition. Most people have heard of The A-Team and that alone will drive people to see it, while very few have heard of The Losers.
What this means is that while The Losers may open pretty strong, the week following they are going to get absolutely annihilated at the box office by the better-known brand.
The Losers was going to be up against Date Night (which I’m pretty sure will attract a different demographic) on its original release date, then Kick-Ass the week after which is apparently going to get some pretty good reviews (check out the top right corner of this poster), but at least Kick-Ass isn’t about a group of military-types on the run from the government.
The only logical reason I can see behind the move is that The Losers has gone in for reshoots – otherwise this seems like an own-goal for the movie studio.
Ah well, in the meantime you can read about the Daily Mail (of course) getting all hot and bothered about Zoe Saldana in her underwear…
…or you can read the excellent first twelve issues of The Losers by Andy Diggle and Jock, collected in one handy volume:
Continue Reading »As a fan of Diggle and Jock’s original run on The Losers, I’m still excited for this movie but…and there’s always a but…something isn’t quite working for me in this trailer. I’m not really sure what it is, whether it’s the editing, the Chris Evans-ing, the music, the fact that I think Morgan’s delivery is a little less angry than it should be, whatever – but judge for yourself.

I have to say (1) I love the poster, and (2) I’m looking forward to the movie.
Good stuff!

Or, more accurately, the upcoming Comedian, pop of the Winchesters and annoying dead guy on that damn medical show that isn’t about medicine is Clay, leader of The Losers – Andy Diggle and Jock’s excellent Vertigo book from a few years ago.
I’d actually forgotten that a movie of this was in the works, but I’m kind of happy with the casting – the book was excellent and hey, look you can get in on the ground floor nice and cheap right here on The Losers store page or by clicking below.
God, I’m such a shill.
