You know, I don’t think I saw the last two Shrek movies but I do remember Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots stealing the show in Shrek 2 – and judging from the trailer campaign, Dreamworks know how to advertise his spin-off movie…

Looks pretty good. Some interesting shots in here, and an appropriate sense of inevitability. August 27th isn’t too far off…

New Doctor Who Trailer

July 25, 2011 by

After the SDCC panel, here’s a trailer for the second half of the current season.

I don’t know about you but there’s a shot about 26 seconds in there which makes me a little worried…

Also: Cybermen!

Over the course of SDCC, Marvel has been revealing pre-production art of the Avengers – and they fit together…

(Click to make a bit larger)

Black Widow, Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Nick Fury, Maria Hill and Agent Coulson all look pretty damn good here – and honestly, I’m getting a little excited by next year’s movie especially after the post-credits bit on Captain America

Oh, and if the Skrulls are in the movie as rumored, I’d say the chances of Coulson being one are pretty damn high, no?

…web…see what I did there?

Not entirely sold on this in spite of liking everyone in the cast a lot (except Sally Field; I can’t stand Sally Field). I seem to remember reading a review where the origin was showed only in flashbacks, but this looks to be incorporating it wholesale into the plot of the film. I do, however, like the inclusion of Richard and Mary Parker. Now if only Sony hadn’t made this, and we could have them going off to meet Samuel L Jackson…

And for a movie trailer, the POV stuff makes it look like a pretty good video game.

Not entirely sure if that’s a compliment or not…

The Thing trailer

July 14, 2011 by

A few days ago there was the poster, now the whole trailer has been released for The Thing:

It puts more emphasis on Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s character than the trailer they showed at NYCC last year, and I guess that’s unsurprising as she’s the movie’s biggest name (sorry, Mr Eko; sorry, young Uncle Owen) – and I still like the look of it.

It has the feel of the original in set design, lighting and music at least – but perhaps too much so. Do you think there might be a blood test in the movie? A confrontation between people who used to trust each other? A dog?

Regardless, I still like the look of this. Haters be damned!

Disney’s first trailer for John Carter has hit the internets –

The movie is intended to be the first of a trilogy based on the first three books in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom series – I suspect another attempt to capture a little Pirates of the Caribbean magic, although that didn’t work too well for Prince of Persia – and so far it looks…well, it’s been a long time since I read any John Carter books, but I seem to remember red Martians being red and not merely tattooed, green Martians looking less like Geonosians, and there being much more nudity.

That said, I will give this a shot as I’m a big fan of Taylor Kitsch after Friday Night Lights (and yes, I liked him as Gambit), and because once I put my misgivings aside, it’s actually quite a nice trailer.

I still don’t quite understand the Disney marketing department’s decision to take the ‘of Mars’ out of the title, though. Are they worried that people will think it’s science fiction? Because there are aliens in it, you know…

I’ve pretty much enjoyed – then immediately forgotten about – all the Mission Impossible movies, but it’s never been a franchise that I’ve wanted to see revisited, really.

That said, Brad ‘The Incredibles‘ Bird’s live-action debut MI: Ghost Protocol looks like it might be something to look forward to. Back for the same again are Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg, joined this time round by Hawkeye-to-be Jeremy Renner, Sawyer-that-was Josh Holloway, and hot-as-ever Paula Patton.

Oh, and the magnificent Tom Wilkinson, who I’m fairly sure should be in every movie to add a touch of class.

(If you have problems with your flash player there’s a youtube version here)

Wonder if Ving Rhames and Michelle Monaghan were asked back?

Pixar’s Brave Trailer

June 28, 2011 by

Brave, the next film from Pixar, has had its first teaser released.

I’m a big fan of Pixar – and I just rewatched the first two Toy Story movies this weekend – and this looks to be continuing their policy of putting out movies I want to watch. Except the Cars movies. I couldn’t care less about them.

The latest (and, I think, last) Captain America: The First Avenger trailer has been released. I don’t know about you, but I’m buying Chris Evans as Steve Rogers more the more that I see.

That said, they’d be wise to drop the ‘heroes are made in America’ bit for the overseas audiences. A little self-aggrandizing, there.

I love Jason Statham – in a pure, manly man way.

I can’t think of another actor currently working that I enjoy as much in dumb action movies. Maybe Statham’s often-partner, Jet Li, but he seems to have stepped back a little. As a result, I’m looking forward to this, although I doubt I’ll end up watching it in the cinema. Robert DeNiro and Clive Owen co-star, but this looks to be Statham’s show.

I’m not a fan of Clive Owen, actually, but I can put up with him here for two reasons: (1) dodgy ‘tache, and (2) he gets punched in the nuts. Good times.

Pros:
Statham
Rock You Like A Hurricane
DeNiro not appearing to be mugging for the camera too much
Clive Owen gets punched in nuts
Clive Owen’s dodgy ‘tache

Cons:
Clive Owen

Pros outweigh cons!

Via AICN (and the British trashy tabloid the Sun), comes a UK version of the Rise of the Planet of the Apes trailer. Be warned that it virtually lays out the plot of the entire movie – but it’s still pretty good.

I still may not be able to but James Franco as a scientist, but aside from that I’m pretty much sold. Just watching the trailer I can feel myself feeling sorry for Caesar (I’m a terrible softy when it comes to animals), and I think that he may be a leap forward in fully-realized CG characters interacting with humans.

Oh, and Draco Malfoy is apparently a dick in any world…

Ape shall not kill ape next month!

Lots to like the look of here. And clowns. Why did it have to be clowns?

Poor Rory doesn’t get much face time does he?

(And by season six I clearly mean season thirty-two).

I think I’d subconsciously buried the existence of MTV’s upcoming Teen Wolf series, because if I made a list of 80′s movies I never wanted to be converted into TV shows, that would probably be pretty high on the list (obviously, cartoons don’t count).

Because, really, how can you top this?

Well…maybe by switching out basketball for boxing, and Michael J Fox for Jason Fucking Bateman*.

Anyway, now that your nostalgia is over, I present the trailer for MTV’s Teen Wolf.

It’s amazing. It’s like the creators looked at everything that made the first Teen Wolf almost watchable – like a sense of humor, a likeable lead, and a popular sport, and replaced it with a sinister tone, a dull lead, and lacrosse.

Aside from the name of the show and the basic ‘I was a teenage werewolf’ concept, there’s not a lot of the original Teen Wolf here, and it seems obvious that the creators looked to The Vampire Diaries pretty heavily for inspiration; there’s a bad boy Wolf type who really won’t be anything at all like Damon Salvatore, a pretty girl who tucks her hair behind her ear who drives our hero to wolf out a little when he gets too close, a secret group of people hunting vampires wolfy types, and a knowledgeable best friend (sadly a guy and not someone who is, say, an attractive witchy type). Oh, and lots and lots of shots in the woods at night.

They probably looked to theTwilight books and movies too, but I’m happy to report that I haven’t read or seen any of those.

On the other hand, if Teen Wolf is actually a bit like The Vampire Diaries, it could end up being actually rather good and kind of addictive, which would be a bit annoying.

On a vaguely related note, I remember when the ‘M’ in MTV used to stand for Music…

*I’m pretty sure Jason Bateman’s middle name is actually Fucking. Or it should be, anyway.

A new Thor trailer hits

February 17, 2011 by

A new trailer for Thor has hit, expanding on what we’ve seen before. This time out, we start off more Earth-bound…

For me, this is still the movie to beat this summer. Yes, X-Men First Class looks better than expected, but I still have my doubts about Captain America – and Green Lantern looks like it could be a huge disappointment.

This, though – this I rank highly for three reasons; firstly, Kenneth Branagh can do no wrong in my eyes – none at all; second, Natalie Portman remains one of my favorite actresses dating back to Leon (that’s The Professional to you Yanks) and the hugely underrated Beautiful Girls; and thirdly, I was damn impressed with Chris Hemsworth’s five minutes of screen time at the start of Star Trek – the guy has charisma by the bucketload and I think he really sells me on the part in this trailer.

So yes, the gauntlet – well, hammer – is thrown down. For my money, this is the one to beat.

After what felt like a long wait on the movie’s facebook page, with plenty of people joining up just to point out they thought the movie would be crap, the first trailer for this year’s X-Men: First Class is now live…

I think it looks promising enough, but there’s not really a lot of substance to the trailer. Nice to weave in a few shots from the first movies though. Call me cautiously optimistic for now.

Thor Superbowl Movie Trailer

February 6, 2011 by

Captain America wasn’t the only Marvel movie getting a trailer in the Superbowl – Thor also got a spot:

This one sells me on the movie much better (although as the full trailer is already out, I have a better idea what to expect).

Big guy –

- has hammer –

- hits stuff.

Yep, that’ll do nicely.

Okay, so it’s not as terrible on second and third viewing as I was afraid it might be – but the editing feels sloppy and the few shots of Cap in action there are feel a little cheesy.

That said, there are a number of bright spots in the trailer, from the reveal of Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull –

- to the impressive-looking before and after shots of Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers.

Also, there’s Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter, who looks like a no-nonsense lady.

Finally, in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-them moment are a bunch of characters looking a bit familiar:

That looks an awful lot like some Howling Commandos, sans leader Nick Fury – although apparently Sam Jackson’s doing reshoots at the moment, so you never know…

Fringe’s Friday Move

December 15, 2010 by

You have to give the Fringe team credit (and Fox too, if this is actually a real trailer) – they’re not about to shy away from people’s reactions to the show’s new Friday scheduling…
