Welcome to the new home of Comic By Comic! I finally took the plunge and redirected the blog here, importing all the old posts to boot.
I’m having a couple of issues with updating my old permalinks so that they point to the new wordpress blog, but I’m sure I’ll break it down eventually.
In the meantime, please update your blogrolls to reflect the new URL- any feedburner feeds should update automatically (he said crossing his fingers) but any help is welcome!
Continue Reading »You probably came here from www.comicbycomic.com, my regular blog – although it hasn’t been too regular over the past few months.
Anyway, it’s a new year if not a new decade (look, it’s not okay, don’t get me started) so I thought I’d make some changes. More to come over the next few days – and hopefully even some posts!
Continue Reading »It’s a pretty small week this time round (thankfully!) and it may be even smaller than I think.
PS There’s a full post to come soon, honest!
RED ROBIN #8 – This continues to be a solid book. I stand by what I said some years ago about Tim Drake being one of the best characters that DC has (look, I can’t be bothered to find and link to it, but I’m sure I did, round about the time that One Year Later was rolling out) – and although the new direction has its share of detractors, I think its a good progression for Tim.
SUPERMAN: WORLD OF NEW KRYPTON #11 – As the series winds down to what, no doubt, will be an open-ended conclusion to allow for Brainiac and the LSH and the following War of the Supermen, the book continues to surprise me – because it’s still enjoyable, engaging and shedding new light on the character of Superman after over seventy years of publishing.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN PRESENTS: JACKPOT # 1 – Like the last few Spidey mini-series that have come out, I’m letting this one pass me by. I’ll pick it up at some point but probably when it’s in the back issue bins.
DEADPOOL TEAM-UP # 897 – This continues to be indefensible, I’m aware of that. I’m sorry.
SIEGE # 1 – Maaaybe. The temptation to skip this and pick it up in trade, probably at less than the cost of the full issues, is pretty tempting. The thing is, that will be kind of like a watershed; I probably won’t be picking up the single issue Avengers books if I wait for the trade on this, and, well, that’s a big thing for me. So I’m not sure.
X-MEN: ASGARDIAN WARS HC – Ok, not only do I have the paperback trade of this that came out donkey’s years ago, but I also have the single issues now. But I’d still recommend this to anyone who likes old-school Marvel; the X-Men, the New Mutants and Alpha Flight all bound up in a Loki revenge plot. And as an added bonus, you get Rachel Grey and Maddie Pryor, too.
X-MEN: MUTANT MASSACRE HC – Again, I have most of the issues but this is damn tempting. This was a crossover when a crossover meant something. For X-Factor, Angel’s near-crucifixion lead to his attempted suicide and conversion into Apocalypse’s Death; for the X-Men, the injuries sustained to the team cut their numbers as several members left for an extended period – and Wolverine and Sabretooth threw down for the first time before it happened every other month; for the New Mutants, it started them going out on their own as they realized the senior team couldn’t do everything. Throw in Thor, Daredevil and Power Pack and you’ve got a good collection here.

Recently I’ve been getting a little disaffected blogging every day over at the regular blog, Comic By Comic. I was putting stuff up there virtually every day, more than often more than once. And it’s not that I don’t love the comics. It’s that writing every day about them, even if it’s just for a couple of paragraphs was kind of wiping me out.
Here’s the thing; I’m no John Scalzi. Clearly. With, you know, not having published any awesome books (well, any books), not being a creative consultant on any TV shows (although call me, I can free up some time) and not having a blog read by what I imagine to be…well, a lot of people every day.
My point is that Scalzi writes on his blog almost every day in addition to all the other stuff he does. Quite often, these aren’t fluff pieces; they’re hundreds of words long. They’re essays. They’re thought-provoking. It’s depressing. It makes you feel a tiny wee bit inadequate. But then I remember – he’s a professional writer.
This is what he does for a living now. He doesn’t have to sit at a desk doing a regular, boring ass job for nine or ten hours a day. I do – and what that means is that the limited time I have to write (and, yes, I say that although some of my blogging is done at work) has to be productive.
And that means that I’m scaling back on the comic blogging – and since I started doing that last week, I’ve actually found that I’m more productive in the screenwriting. I have twelve pages of a screenplay done since I pulled back on the blogging – and that’s included a couple of days when I was under the weather.
So I guess I’ve finally learned my lesson – write every day, just not necessarily on the blog.

Either that or he’s about to chow down…
But enough with the homages to this cover, okay DC?

Continue Reading »I wondered why everyone was looking out of the windows in our building – turns out that a cab had caught fire; apparently it started under the hood. As I got there, a policeman opened the back door (presumably in case anyone was in there) and there was a loud ‘pop’ – he was knocked sideways as the cab ‘exploded’.
It didn’t actually explode – but the flames spread to the whole cab.
Nobody was badly hurt and by the time I got hold of my blackberry, the fire department had it under control.
But still, that was some fast response from the police and fire.

The Source has a preview of Titans Blackest Night.
The art is by Ed Benes.
Can you tell?
I’m not actually knocking Benes’ cheesecake art; I’m all for it – I just find it funny that he can’t go three pages without a butt shot.
I love this ad; it’s a good story well told – and it’s funny, but it seems like you rarely see Robert Carlyle with his normal accent. It’s usually softened down somewhat .
The ad is even more impressive when you take into account that that it’s all done in one take – although I do wonder how many times Carlyle got most of the way through it then screwed up right at the end, having to be driven back down to the start again.
And, unlike Warren Ellis, I actually quite like Johnnie Walker, too.
