Forty years ago tomorrow, Apollo 11 left Earth to carry three astronauts to land on the moon, and four days later man walked on the moon.
I think today the idea of man walking on the moon seems passe. After a plethora of scifi and CGI shots, it’s difficult to imagine that there was a time when the world was gripped with the idea of men simply being on the moon. Certainly as someone born after this happened, I can understand that.
And as someone born after man last walked on the moon in 1972, I can understand it even more.
After all, to me, it’s almost as though we’ve always been on the moon in some form or the other.
But we haven’t been back there in over 36 years.
In that time, NASA and the space programs across the world have become to a large extent marginalized and sidelined, and space exploration no longer captures the public’s imagination the way it once did.
How many people are aware that the Space Shuttle Endeavour will be launching this afternoon (weather and mechanics prevailing)? That it will be constructing the final components of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s laboratory so that experiments can be conducted in the International Space Station which are directly exposed to space?
Or how many people know that Europe is currently conducting experiments to determine the psychological effects of long-term isolation on a possible manned mission to Mars?
Do many people give any thought to the time when, due to the depletion of the planet’s natural resources, it won’t be an effective use of energy to mine or drill for resources any more?
Or what will happen when that happens in light of the world’s ever increasing population?
It’s difficult today for a lot of people to think that far ahead. It’s easy to get distracted by the gloomy economy, by the posturing of overseas countries, by the death of a pop star, by personal circumstance. I understand that. I do.
But as parenthood comes closer on the horizon for me, I do find myself sometimes wondering what’s going to happen to the next generation, and the generation after that, who may have to confront problems with this planet that we can’t even properly conceive of yet. I wonder what happens when they realize that maybe we’re the generation that should have started preparing the way to other planets and other resources sooner.
I think maybe that’s why I’ve always been a fan of science fiction in all of its many forms (well, except cyberpunk – that just annoys me). It’s the hope for a better tomorrow.
Plus, you know, space if just cool.

He-Frog and the Muppets of the Universe! (via @Knippenberg) I haven’t decided if this has made or ruined my day. I’m leaning towards “made,” though.
So wrong that it’s right!

So that’s Songbird, MACH-Whatever and Techno – the last two were last scene working for the CSA – but where’s Atlas? The big guy was forced to work as a merc in The Last Defenders, but hasn’t been seen since – be nice to have him turn up somewhere in here too.
It’s funny, but after the lacklustre Deadpool crossover, I was worried about Diggle’s direction for the book – but it continues to be one of the more unpredictable titles on Marvel’s roster and is well worth picking up.

…and I guess it’s comic-related even though I haven’t seen an episode yet (I have a few sitting on the DVR though!)
So, a new episode airs on Monday at 7.30PM ET/PT:
School’s back in session, and things have changed. PETER PARKER’s actually invited to FLASH THOMPSON’s birthday bash. Meanwhile, SPIDER-MAN has to party with SANDMAN, who’s once again looking to make his Big Score. And is that VENOM disappearing into the night?

Egads.
Of the three, I’d prefer Cooper to get it – Reynolds is good, but I’d rather have him as Deadpool or, god willing, Wally West. Timberlake I haven’t seen act (although I can’t imagine that he’s particularly good) but I just don’t see him having the physique or requisite…what’s the word I’m looking for?…manliness to play a fearless figher pilot.
He doesn’t exactly scream testosterone to me. You want Hal to bust a move and dance Peter Parker off the screen, sure. You want him to be a tough guy? No.
Cooper on the other hand, is already pretty built, can do comedy and drama, and brings less baggage to the role.
No question – if its down to those three, Cooper.

I think Winick’s hit or miss (the majority of Green Arrow was good, but much of his Outsiders stank), and while I enjoyed his first issue, I’m not exactly clamoring for another long run on the book – mainly because he not only gave us Jason Todd back, but he also created the ScareBeast, and the less said about him the better.
That said, I think Daniels really needs to step up his writing game – but with a six issue arc, I think he has room to grow the story he wants to tell. Looks like that story involves Black Mask (is it too obvious if this ends up being Bruce Wayne?), Penguin, Catwoman and Two Face…
…although, really, Harvey? A Two Face Batman? Do we need that?

Stop with the remakes. Stop with the reboots. Create something new. TJ Hooker was never a show that you could take too seriously, since the best acting came from Shatner’s hairpiece – so why bother with an action comedy of it?
What’s next?
Hunter?
Jake and the Fatman?
Sledgehammer?
Okay, I’d probably pay for a Sledgehammer movie, but still –
- create something original, Hollywood!

Personally, I think it’s a good job it was ditched. Shatner singing? Awesome.
Kirk singing? Not so much.
I think a lot of the rest of this was filmed – specifically the Nero-Klingon thing – so hopefully we’ll see this show up on the DVD.
