Madoff gets 150 years

June 29, 2009 by

Well.

I’m going to guess that he’s never going to see the outside of prison again.

Somewhere, I like to think Kevin Bacon is tapdancing at this news…

Well, obviously Mecha Simian didn’t win the Zuda competition in April. In fact, the strip came in 7th. Not great, but not terrible – after all it’s a pretty big deal to get into the final ten in the first place.

I’m not sure I’ll be doing anything else with the strip in the immediate future but in the meantime, it’s preserved on Zuda here, and the script and assorted odds and ends can be found here.

Over on my comics blog, I also posted an eight page comic I did (which was rejected by Zuda a few months ago), called The Thin Dead Line. Click on over and take  a look – page one’s at the bottom… There’s also a bunch of production stuff on the comic, again, including the script, here.

I’ve also updated the writing section to include spec scripts I wrote a few years ago for Smallville, Veronica Mars and Lost. They’re not fantastic and the Lost one especially has huge structural issues (because hanging off a cliff for half an episode’s dumb), but they were good practice.

In addition, there’s an original pilot for a comedy that I wrote before that. Again, not perfect but good practice. You can read Lucky Man here.

Phew!

Robert Roriguez is making Predators.

As in, a sequel/reboot/return-to-the-franchise-of Predator, one of my three favorite action movies ever.

I mean, yes, I’ve been burned twice by Aliens vs Predator which are pretty bad movies (despite being enjoyable as long as your brain’s disengaged) but I still have faith in Predator as a franchise; the concept’s strong enough to carry on as long as it’s executed well.

I think Rodriguez can be hit-and-miss as a filmmaker, but he knows how to handle action sequences, so I’m crossing my fingers!

According to EW, there’s a wee kerfuffle going on over Lost‘s Charlotte’s age, being as she was once referred to as being born in 1979, but she’s also running around on the island aged 3-or-so in 1974.

Jeez. Easy explanation: the island screwed up her aging.

Now explain to me how wrinkly Ethan was only thirtyish when the plane crashed on the island…

Very Exciting News.

Indeed, it could be classified as Awesome News.

But I can’t say anything about it.

Yet.

I’m heading back to the UK for a few days, so I’ve asked my old pal Chris Partin to step in and post a couple of things while I’m gone.

Primates and Prejudice

February 17, 2009 by

Hey, there’s a Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and now a Pride and Predators – but I’d like to throw my support behind Matt Springer‘s Primates and Prejudice – the first in an Austen Apes series.

Of course, every story needs a hero…

Urgh

January 13, 2009 by

I’ve played around with enough blogs over the past few years to know what I want to do mostly.

But I still can’t get this Lifestream thing to work.

Also, I don’t really know if I want it to work. I don’t think that this is a place where I should be adding a load of feeds and things. I mean, surely my Flickr and Twitter feeds will be enough, right?

Back at the con!

July 27, 2008 by

I’m back at the con for the last day.

This morning I’ll be at the Women in Marvel panel for an announcement from OS’s Val D’Orazio (I know what it is and it’s something I’m really looking forward to!) and then for DC’s last panel of the weekend which apparently has big news.
Because, you know, Milestone, Kevin Smith and the battle for the cowl aren’t big enough.
After that I think I’m all conned out – I’m going to hit the floor for a few more hours, try to find a Little Stuffed Bull, grab some sketchbooks, take some more pics and generally take it easy.
Then back home to the West Coast!
Oh, David Gallaher also has big news at his Zuda panel this morning – and that’s also good news!

Running late

July 13, 2008 by

I should have had a post ready to go today but I’m running a little behind schedule…however as I’m now obliged to post every day I thought that I’d better post something – so this is just a note to say that the entire Comic-Con schedule is now up.

No Star Trek movie panel, in spite of them being sponsors? Seems like a missed opportunity to me, no matter when the release date is. Oh well…
This week – not that you’re really that interested – I’ll be outlining where I’m going to be, crowds, lines and toilet breaks allowing and what I’m hopefully going to be doing at one of the panels.
Have a good Sunday all!

San Diego 2008: Friday

July 9, 2008 by

Onto Friday at Comic-Con (the link to the days seem to be down right now)…and the panels that look like I may sit in on (at least, if I can get into them, if they don’t overlap and if I can cross my legs long enough so I don’t lose the seat I do get by needing to pee).

If there’s nothing else going on, I’m a sucker for the comics company ones…but that doesn’t mean I’ll go to both of these:

10:00-11:00 Marvel: Your Universe— Become an integral member of the Marvel Creative Committee as Kevin Feige (president, Marvel Studios), Dan Buckley (president, publishing), Joe Quesada (editor-in-chief, publishing), and Craig Kyle (senior VP, creative development, Marvel Animation) sit down with you and get your thoughts on all things Marvel. They’ll reveal what’s on the horizon with Marvel Studios, Publishing, and Animation and ask for your feedback and insights on what Marvel has done and is planning to do. From the day that The House of Ideas was built, Marvel has been your universe and now more than ever they’d like to hear what you have to say about everything from Marvel cinematic continuity to the upcoming slate of new animated television series in 2009 to the Skrull infiltration of our world. Room 6A

11:30-12:30 Marvel Cup o’ Joe— Meet the EEK himself, Joe Quesada, and surprise guests as they unveil what’s in store for all your favorite Marvel characters and creators, make some surprising announcements, and take on any and all questions! As always, this is the one no-holds barred panel that everyone’s gonna be talking about and the one panel you don’t want to miss! Room 6CDEF

No details yet…but I suspect this could be busy…

11:55-1:30 Warner Bros.: Watchmen— TBA. Hall H

Awesomeness:

12:30-1:15 Spaced— Actor/creator Jessica Hynes (Shaun of the Dead), actor/creator Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead), and director Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz) recall Spaced, the clever and edgy comedy series that started it all for the award-winning team behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Plus: Q&A session.
(Look for the Spaced screening tonight in the same room at 10:15PM!) Room 6A

Gee, do you think this one could be busy?

1:30-2:30 Joss Whedon— Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and the writers and cast of his new short film, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, will show never-before-seen clips while Joss also discusses Buffy Season Eight, the Fray crossover, and the upcoming Serenity comic focusing on Shepherd Book. Ballroom 20

Not sure about this one – I’m not really looking forward to the movie.

2:45-3:45 Lionsgate and Odd Lot Entertainment: The Spirit— Writer/director Frank Miller and producer Deborah Del Prete are joined by film stars Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, and Eva Mendes in unveiling an exclusive preview of the new film based on the classic comic by Will Eisner. Hall H

Maaaybe…Family Guy is a guilty pleasure…

3:30-4:15 Family Guy— Stars Seth MacFarlane and Seth Green and the producers of the Fox animated hit give fans a sneak peek at a never-before-seen episode and discuss the highly anticipated spinoff The Cleveland Show. Ballroom 20

KONG!!

4:00-5:00 Going Ape: Celebrating 75 Years of The Beast and The Beauty of King Kong— KONG! KONG! KONG! Our panel celebrates 75 years of one of
cinema’s most famous and most beloved beasties. Panelists take look back at the
history of King Kong on-screen along with fun facts, reminiscences and anecdotes
about the film that inspired many of us to become fans, filmmakers and fanatics.
A panel of experts and fans is moderated by Mark A. Altman and Jeff Bond (Geek
Monthly). Room 3

The TV stuff kicks off in earnest:

4:30-5:30 Bones— Join the entire cast (David Boreanaz, Emily Deschanel, Michaela Conlin, Tamara Taylor, John Francis Daley) and creators Hart Hanson and Barry Josephson for an hour of behind-the-scenes secrets and the chance to ask them everything you always wanted to know about the hit Fox drama. Ballroom 20

Okay, both Fox shows but in different rooms? Crazy! Soul patch!

5:30-6:30 24— It’s been off the air since May, 2007 but Comic-Con fans will get the first look at the exciting prequel shot in South Africa and the upcoming 7th season of the Emmy winning Fox series, as well as chat with the executive producers and stars Kiefer Sutherland and Carlos Bernard. Room 6CDEF

Another maybe at the end…

6:15-7:00 ’s original series Robot Chicken. In its third season, the network’s Emmy-winning stop-motion and animation show known for its pop culture commentary has just released the episode Robot Chicken Star Wars on DVD. Room 6B

Okay, maybe not – maybe I’ll just camp out after 24 :

6:30-7:15 Prison Break— In their first visit to Comic-Con, stars Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell and Sarah Wayne Callies and producers Matt Olmstead, Kevin Hooks, and Dawn Parouse give a special sneak peek at the show’s upcoming fourth season and take questions from the audience. Room 6CDEF

This could be fun:

6:30-8:00 Kevin Smith Makes a “Porno”— Well, not really, but for the umpteenth time, Smith is back at Comic-Con to talk movies, comics, and whatever else the audience wants to talk about. This year, he’ll be highlighting his fall film, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks. Expect some special guests. Hall H

Probably won’t go the awards, but may well go to the bar:

8:30-11:30 The Spirit Presents the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards— The 20th annual Eisner Awards, the “Oscars” of the comics industry, will be given out at a gala ceremony. This year’s special them is “The Magic of Comics.” Presenters include comics creator/director Frank Miller (Sin City, 300, The Spirit), Spongebob Squarepants creator Tom Kenney, and Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Gos, plus several other celebrities from comics, animation, and film. Other prestigious awards to be
given out include the Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award and the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award. The master of ceremonies is Bongo Comics’ Bill Morrison. Admission to the Eisners is free to all Comic-Con attendees—just be sure to bring your badge. Doors open for pros and VIPs at 7:30 and for attendees at 8:15. Ballroom 20

Then again…if I don’t go to the New York screening or the earlier show…

10:15-11:45 Spaced Screening— Actor/creator Jessica Hynes (Shaun of the Dead), actor/creator Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead), and director Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz) introduce a special late-night screening of their favorite episodes from the
edgy British comedy series that started it all for the award-winning team behind
Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Room 6A

Or this could be interesting. Maybe. If I’m not at a bar somewhere.

10:45-12:00 Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog— The story of a low-rent supervillain (Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible), the hero who keeps beating him up (Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer), and the cute girl from the laundromat he’s too shy to talk to (Felicia Day as Penny). This musical in three parts, created for the Internet and written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, Zack Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen, premieres in its entirety on the big screen at Comic-Con. Room 6B

Could be a long day…probably involving drinking!

The programming is up…and here’s what looks good to me…

Thursday

Probably won’t be at the con in time – but I bet the attendees here are subject to change

2:00-3:00 Red Sonja: One-on-OneRobert Rodriguez (Sin City), Rose McGowan (Grindhouse), Doug Aarniokoski (2nd unit director, Resident Evil 3) and David White (Undisputed 2) are teaming up to bring back the red-headed warrior woman known as Red Sonja. Join Robert, Rose, Doug, and David for this one-on-one interview and Q&A session! Room 6CDEF

Bound to be interesting:

3:00-4:00 Spotlight on Ed Brubaker—The Comic-Con special guest Ed Brubaker is the Eisner Award–winning writer (Best Writer 2007, Best New Series 2007—Criminal) whose work on Captain America, Daredevil, X-Men, and Criminal has catapulted him into the upper echelon of today’s best comic writers. Ed talks about what’s next in this Spotlight presentation. Room 7AB

A little birdy tells me there might be something here that interests me:

4:45-5:45 Mondo Marvel—2008 has already been a huge success for Marvel in all corners of the Universe. Now, join top editors and creators, including Greg Pak Skaar, Son of Hulk), Matt Fraction (Invincible Iron Man), Ed Brubaker (Captain America), Jeff Parker (Agents of Atlas), Warren Simons (editor), Mark Paniccia (editor), and Jim McCann (publishing), to find out what’s to come for Iron Man, Hulk, Daredevil, the FF, and all things Marvel. Room 6A

For the writer in me:

5:00-6:00 The Pitching Hour—Michael Polis (WildBrain Studios, YoGabbaGabba), Jermaine Turner (director, Disney/ABC Cable Networks Group), Jill Sanford (manager, original series, Disney Television Animation), Sam Humphries (MySpace Comics), Paula Gould (PEG PR), Jeremy Love (writer/producer, Gettosake Studios), and moderator Dan Evans (freelance development exec) will take an idea from conception through production for various media. This process will include creating a pitch document, obtaining agents, and getting a pitch meeting. The panelists will explain, through hypothetical example and humorous stories, the process that new creators should adapt to make their way into the Hollywood creative battleground. Knowing that each project is unique, there will be a Q&A to allow the audience to really hone in on the solutions to obstacles they may encounter. Also on hand will be IP lawyer Brendan McFeely to give creators insight on protecting their ideas as they navigate Hollywood! Room 5AB

That’s at the same time as this:

5:00-6:00 Comics Experience: How to Write a Pitch!—Hosted by Andy Schmidt (IDW senior editor, GI Joe, Star Trek), panelists Mark Waid (BOOM!
Studios editor-in-chief, Flash, Kingdom Come), James Lucas Jones (Oni Press editor-in-chief), Rob Levin (Top Cow Entertainment editor-in-chief), Chris Gage (The Authority, Invincible Iron Man), C. B. Cebulski (Drain, Wonderlost, X-Men: Divided We Stand) and Nick Lowe (Marvel X-Men editor) offer tips on writing pitches, pitching verbally, and getting your pitch read! Want to write a comic? Don’t miss this panel! Questions from the audience welcome. Room 30CDE

…but at the NYCC, that was more fun than useful.

Because Dexter rocks:

5:45-6:45 Showtime: Dexter—Showtime presents exclusives from the set of the highly anticipated third season of Dexter. Moderator Kristin Dos Santos (E!) presides over this revealing interview and Q&A session with the top stars and executive producers of Dexter, featuring Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, Clyde Phillips, and John Goldwyn, plus a special guest! Room 6CDEF

Conflicts with this, but Dexter wins:

6:00-7:00 DC Nation—DC Senior VP/executive editor Dan DiDio hosts this gabfest with Keith Giffen (Reign in Hell, Ambush Bug: Year None), Geoff Johns (Action Comics, Green Lantern), Brad Meltzer (DCU: Last Will and Testament), and some of the top talent in the industry, talking and teasing upcoming stories! Come learn the secrets behind the most talked about events of the summer! Room 6A

Ooh, Punisher

8:00-8:30 Lionsgate and Marvel: Punisher: War Zone!—Producer Gale Anne Hurd (The Incredible Hulk) and stars Ray Stevenson (Rome) and Julie Benz (Rambo, Dexter) take you into the world of the Punisher for an exclusive first look. You won’t be prepared! Room 6B

If I’m still around and not curled up in a bar or crashed at my hotel…I mean, Autumn Reeser‘s there…not that that, er, has anything to do with anything. Ahem.

10:00-12:00 Warner Premiere and Warner Home Video: World Premiere of Lost Boys The Tribe—Prepare to sink your teeth into the long-awaited and highly anticipated next chapter of the cult phenomenon started by the 1987 cult classic, and be the first to see Lost Boys The Tribe before its July 29 DVD release at this special world premiere. More than 20 years in the making, Lost Boys The Tribe is an homage to the original 1987 cult hit and stars Corey Feldman as vampire hunter Edgar Frog, along with Tad Hilgenbrinck, Angus Sutherland, and Autumn Reeser, eith appearances by Jamison Newlander and Corey Haim. Meet the cast and filmmakers as director P J Pesce and original Lost Boys star Corey Feldman are joined by Tad Hilgenbrinck, Angus Sutherland, and Autumn Reeser to answer questions and talk about the making of this new horror classic. Ballroom 20

That’s one day down…

SDCC Exclusives

June 3, 2008 by

Have I mentioned that I’m going to San Diego this year? It’s my first time at the big con and I’m looking forward to getting lost in the shuffle of approximately eighty kajillion people jostling for space in a couple of panel rooms.

Hope they have better arrangements with the fire marshalls than NYCC had this year…
Anyway, CBR announced some of the exclusives here and while the Astonishing X-Men #25 and Angel #10 variants look nice, and I like the Peter Parker Mighty Mugg well enough, I suspect they’ll all be long gone by the time I pass through the doors.

The Diamond Select exclusives on the other hand I really like.

The Skrullektra (complete with Skrull!) looks pretty nice, even if I’m not really an action figure guy –
- but the Invaders mini-mates take the cake for me.

Look at l’il Namor! He’s so angry!

Mind you if I was stuck wearing those little green trunks I’d be angry too…

So…John Locke has to move the island?

How can you move the island?

It suddenly hit me last night – what I’d somehow missed all along.

An island that can move?

An island that can manipulate minds – sometimes from a distance?

An island that can move?

It’s Krakoa, birthplace to the all-new, all-different X-Men!

It all makes sense now!
